[Chen Yin Hao]
Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit).
Bitter, slightly cold. Enters the Qi level of the Foot-Taiyang and Foot-Taiyin meridians. Promotes urination and dries dampness. Treats Zhang malaria (malaria caused by miasma in mountainous regions) and Shan Jia (abdominal masses or distension/pain). Combined with Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root) and Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), treats Yin Huang (jaundice due to cold-damp stagnation). Combined with Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex), treats Jin Huang (jaundice with a golden hue, indicating severe damp-heat). Brewed with Shumi (Millet) and Mai Qu (Wheat Leaven), treats muscle spasms and cramps. Assisted by Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome) and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), treats damp-heat syndromes. Assisted by Taoren (Peach Seed), treats Xue Huang (jaundice due to blood stasis). Assisted by Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Houpo (Magnolia Bark), treats Shi Huang (jaundice due to predominant dampness). Assisted by Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit), treats Shi Ji Fa Huang (jaundice due to food retention). Assisted by Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizome) and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), treats Huo Huang (jaundice due to blazing fire). Assisted by Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed) and Mutong (Akebia Stem), treats jaundice accompanied by difficult urination. Use the herb without the root. Avoid heat processing. Contraindicated in cases of extreme heat causing jaundice without dampness, and in cases of pure deficiency without dampness.
[Qing Hao]
Liu Huang (Sulfur).
Bitter, slightly acrid, slightly cold. Enters the Blood level of the Hand-Shaoyin, Foot-Shaoyang, and Foot-Jueyin meridians. Its aroma is fragrant and particularly suitable for the Stomach. Treats abdominal fullness in women due to Blood-Qi disorders, and clears latent Yin fire. Crushed and applied externally, treats metal wounds. Combined with Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean), treats Chi Bai Li (dysentery with red and white discharge). Combined with Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), treats chills and fever malaria. Combined with Chichengliu (Tamarix Branch), expels epidemic pathogenic heat. Assisted by Biejia (Tartaric Shell), treats Wen Malaria (characterized by fever without chills). Assisted by Renshen (Ginseng Root), treats spontaneous sweating due to deficiency. Added to tonifying formulas, treats Gu Zheng Xu Lao (steaming bone sensation in consumptive disease). (Note: When used with Tong Er Zi [Child's Urine], do not use the leaves; if using the root, do not use the stem. For treating steaming bone, take the seeds processed with child's urine; for treating dysentery to clear damp-heat, use the leaves, or crush them for juice, which is even better.)
[Yi Mu Cao]
Jie Chong Wei (Leonurus Japonicus Herb/Seed).
Used to process Liu Huang (Sulfur), Cihuang (Realgar), and Pishi (Arsenic Trioxide). Avoid iron.
Acrid, bitter, neutral. Enters the Blood level of the Foot-Jueyin meridian. Moves blood without damaging new blood, nourishes blood without causing blood stasis to stagnate. Promotes urination and defecation. Treats Chan Hou Xue Zhang (postpartum abdominal distension due to blood stasis), cures Xue Ni Da Re (severe heat due to rebellious blood), eliminates Ru Yong (acute mastitis), and resolves snake venom. Combined with Shanzha Tan (Charred Hawthorn Fruit), treats postpartum hemorrhage that does not stop. Combined with Chen Yan Mei Tan (Charred Aged Salted Plum), stops Chi Li (bloody dysentery). Added to cooling-blood herbs, treats Re Xue Guan Tong Ren (critical condition where hot blood invades the pupil area). Assisted by Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), dispels wind-heat. Crushed for juice, dripped into the ear. Mixed with vinegar, applied to horse bites.
The white flowers enter the Qi level; the red flowers enter the Blood level. Can be steamed with wine or stir-fried with honey-water. Use raw to remove blood stasis. Contraindicated in Beng Lou (metrorrhagia and metrostaxis) and Tong Zi San Da (dilated pupils).
