Pungent, neutral, warm. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. It unblocks Yang to reach the exterior, moves through meridians and disperses cold. Treats edema of the face and eyes, acute pain in the heart and abdomen. Its root (Cong Bai) induces sweating powerfully, penetrating everywhere. Combined with Perilla Leaf (Zi Su), it unblocks blood stasis. Combined with Turmeric Tuber (Yu Jin), it treats hematuria. Combined with Szechuan Lovage Rhizome (Chuan Xiong), it treats threatened abortion with bleeding and cardiac pain. Combined with Frankincense (Ru Xiang), applied as a paste externally, it treats painful swelling of the scrotum. Paired with Jujube Fruit (Da Zao), it treats restlessness due to cholera-like disorder. Paired with Fermented Soybean (Dan Dou Chi), Ginger (Sheng Jiang), and Salt, applied hot to the umbilicus, it treats constipation and urinary retention. Inserting salt into the urethra via a green onion tube treats urinary retention and critical cases of bladder inversion (Zhuan Pao).
Green onions are hot-natured, white onions are cold-natured; use with roots for both. For foot-qi and Ben Tun syndrome, decoct and drink with roots. For collapse of Yang and cold extremities, stir-fry and apply hot to the umbilicus. For traumatic injuries and metal wounds, stir-fry until cooked, pound into a paste, apply while hot, and replace when cool. For sores, scabies, and edema, decoct leaves and wash frequently. Contraindicated for those with rising deficient Qi. Avoid green onions when taking Rehmannia Root (Di Huang) or Trichosanthes Kirilowii Root (Chang Shan).
Strange Syndrome: Sores appear on the face and entire body, shining like a cat's eye, without pus or blood, causing severe pain and itching, with reduced appetite, named Cold Carbuncle (Han Chuang). Self-heals by eating chicken, fish, or meat mixed with green onions and garlic chives.

Single-clove garlic is especially good. For heatstroke, mix with earth slurry (Di Jiang) and take. For moxibustion sores, slice and apply moxa on top. To reduce abscesses, mix with sesame oil and apply. Excessive consumption damages spleen and lungs, depletes liver blood, harms eyes and spirit. Contraindicated for those with phlegm-fire internally or taking tonifying medicines. Consuming with honey can be fatal.
