[Fear and Incompatibility]
It is incompatible with Black Lead (Nigri Plumbi Oxidum), Hu Fen (Lead White Frost), Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Rehmanniae Radix, Duzhou (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix - *Note: Text says 'Du Zhou', likely a variant or typo for Duzhu/Du Huo*), Yimucao (Leonuri Fructus), Yang Bushicao (Plant unknown, literally 'Sheep Does Not Eat Grass'), Diyuyu Sanguisorbae Radix, Wasong Leucadendri Caulis, Wujia Pi Acanthopanacis Cortex, and Dongguazhi Juice of Winter Melon.
[Crealurite / Xionghuang Context Implied by Text Structure, but Header says Shihuang? No, text starts with fears then properties. The first block describes **Xionghuang** (Realgar) properties implicitly via comparison "functions slightly same as Xionghuang", but the header provided in prompt is "Cishi / Shigao". Let's look closely. "Wei Heiqian... Xin Ping You Du... Ru Gan Jing... Gongyue lve tong Xionghuang". This description matches **Shihuang** (Realgar)? No, Realgar is Xin Wei Wu Du. **Shihuang** (Realgar) is Xin Wen You Du. Wait, the text says "Gongyue lve tong Xionghuang" (Functions slightly same as Realgar). This implies the subject is **NOT** Realgar, but something similar. The next paragraph starts "Yiming Hanshui Shi... Gan Xin Dan Han... Ru Zu Yangming...". This describes **Shigao** (Gypsum Fibrosum).
Let's re-read carefully.
Block 1: "Wei Heiqian... Xin Ping You Du... Ru Gan Jing... Gongyue lve tong Xionghuang." -> This actually describes **Shihuang** (Realgar) in many texts, BUT Realgar is Xin Wen. Here it says Xin Ping. And it says "Same as Xionghuang". This is confusing. However, looking at standard *Depei Bencao*, the entry for **Shihuang** (Realgar) usually lists these fears. But wait, the prompt title is "Cishi / Shigao".
Actually, in *Depei Bencao*, there is an entry for **Shihuang** (Realgar) and **Shigao** (Gypsum).
The first paragraph: "Wei Heiqian... Xin Ping You Du... Ru Gan Jing...". This matches the description of **Shihuang** (Realgar) in some contexts, but typically Realgar is Warm.
However, the second paragraph explicitly says "Yiming Hanshui Shi... Gan Xin Dan Han...". This is definitely **Shigao** (Gypsum).
Is the first part describing **Shihuang**? Or is it describing **Shigao**'s incompatibilities?
Standard Gypsum (Shigao) fears: Iron, Mangcao, Badou. It does NOT fear Heiqian, Hufen, etc.
Realgar (Shihuang) fears: Heiqian, Hufen, Xiongxiong, Dihuang, etc.
So, the first block describes **Shihuang** (Realgar).
BUT the user prompt says "Chapter: Cishi / Shigao".
And the text says "Gongyue lve tong Xionghuang" (Functions slightly same as Realgar). If the subject was Realgar, it wouldn't say "same as Realgar". It would say "Same as Pishuang"?
Let's check *Depei Bencao* online.
Entry: **Shihuang** (Realgar). Properties: Xin, Wen, You Du.
Entry: **Shigao** (Gypsum). Properties: Gan, Xin, Han.
The text provided: "Xin, Ping, You Du... Gongyue lve tong Xionghuang."
This specific text block "Xin Ping... Tong Xionghuang" is often associated with **Pishuang** (Arsenolite) or a variant of Realgar processing.
However, given the prompt context "Cishi / Shigao", and the fact that the second half is clearly Shigao, I will translate the first part as referring to the substance described (likely a form of Arsenic mineral, possibly **Shihuang** or **Pishuang**, but since the text compares it TO Xionghuang, I will translate it literally).
*Correction*: In *Bencao Gangmu* and others, **Shihuang** (Realgar) is Xin Wen. **Pishuang** is Xin Ping/Warm.
The text says "Gongyue lve tong Xionghuang". This implies the subject IS NOT Xionghuang.
Given the ambiguity and the strict instruction to translate what is written:
I will treat the first section as describing a substance (let's call it Substance A, likely Pishuang or a specific type of Shihuang variant mentioned in this book) and the second section as Shigao.
*Self-Correction based on common TCM texts*: The list of fears (Heiqian, Hufen, etc.) belongs to **Shihuang** (Realgar) in many pharmacopoeias, despite the property discrepancy in this specific excerpt or my memory. Actually, *Zhonghua Bencao* notes Shihuang fears Heiqian.
Wait, if it fears Heiqian, and is Xin Ping, and acts like Xionghuang...
Let's just translate faithfully.
[Incompatibilities]
It is incompatible with Black Lead (Nigri Plumbi Oxidum), Hu Fen (Lead White Frost), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Rehmanniae Radix Prepared (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Duzhu (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix - *Text says Du Zhou, likely typo for Duzhu*), Leonuri Fructus (Leonuri Fructus), Yang Bushicao (Herba which Sheep Do Not Eat), Sanguisorbae Radix (Sanguisorbae Radix), Leucadendri Caulis (Leucadendri Caulis), Acanthopanacis Cortex (Acanthopanacis Cortex), and Juice of Winter Melon (Melonis Citrullini Succus).
[Properties and Actions]
Pungent, neutral, toxic. Enters the Yin aspect of the Liver Meridian. It obtains the essence of Yin Earth. It serves as a guide to search out and eliminate Yin pathogens. Its functions are roughly similar to those of Realgar (Xionghuang). It searches out liver parasites, detoxifies, and expels evil. When ground with Calomel (Qingfen) and Pig Fat (Zhi Zhi) and applied externally, it treats stubborn tinea corporis (cow-hide ringworm). Mixed with vinegar and egg yolk (Jizi Huang) and applied, it treats ulcers caused by lice/worms (ulcerative skin diseases). Inserted into a pig gallbladder and placed on the finger, it treats snake-like carbuncles (herpetic zoster/toxic sores). Its toxicity can be mitigated by Winter Melon Juice, Leonuri Fructus, Sanguisorbae Radix, and Rehmanniae Radix. It is contraindicated in cases of Yin deficiency with dry blood.
[Gypsum Fibrosum / Shigao]
Also known as Hanshui Shi (Cold Water Stone), also known as Xi Li Shi (Fine-Grained Stone).
Egg Yolk (Jizi Huang) acts as its guiding drug. It fears Iron. It is adverse to Aristolochia Manshuriensis Root (Mangcao), Croton Seed (Badou), and Ma Mu Du Gong (Toxin of Horse Eye).
Sweet, pungent, bland, cold. Enters the Qi aspect of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, and Shaoyang Meridian. It releases the muscle layer and induces sweating, clears heat and purges fire, generates fluids and quenches thirst. It treats Cold Damage (Shanghan) and epidemic febrile diseases, Yangming headache, fever with aversion to cold, tidal fever at dusk (Ribu Chaore), manic fever with macules, turbid red urine, excessive thirst with desire to drink, scorched tongue and dry nose, summerheat stroke with spontaneous sweating, eye pain, and toothache.
When combined with Licorice Root (Gancao), Ginger (Jiang), and Honey (Mi), it treats wheezing and cough due to excess heat.
When combined with Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), it treats Warm Malaria (Wen Nue).
When combined with Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie) and Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi), it treats toothache due to Stomach Fire.
When combined with Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Cangzhu), it treats dampness obstruction in the middle jiao (*Text missing character, inferred as dampness*).
When combined with Pinellia Tuber (Banxia), it unblocks Yin and directs rebellious Qi downward.
When combined with Red Lead (Huandan), sprinkled on non-healing wounds, it promotes tissue regeneration and relieves pain.
Combined with Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Prepared Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao), and Scallion White (Congbai), taken down with tea water, it treats eye coldness due to Wind Evil.
Combined with Oyster Shell Powder (Muli Fen), taken with fresh well water, it treats epistaxis and headache (*Can also be instilled into the nose*).
Combined with Trichosanthes Seed (Louren), Aurantium Fruit (Zhike), and Prunus Maritima Seed (Yuliren), it washes away stagnant heat.
When used with Ephedra Stem (Mahuang), it draws out fire from the deepest Yin (*Use Mahuang only in doses of 2-3 fen*).
Prepare by taking four taels each of Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) and Congruous Stone (Ningshui Shi), and one jin of Mirabilite (Mangxiao). Grind them into powder together. Decoct one sheng five he of raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao) juice. Add the previous powders and decoct together, stirring constantly until melted. Add four taels of Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai), mix evenly, pour into a basin to solidify into "Bi Xue" (Green Snow). Grind into powder. Use by holding in mouth, insufflating into throat, or mixing with water to swallow. Treats various manic fever conditions.
Quality is judged by being bright white, clean, with texture like bundled needles; softer material is superior. For releasing the exterior, use raw; for clearing heat, use calcined (*Text missing character, context implies calcined or processed, but standard is Raw for Heat. However, text says "Do not doubt it is too cold and generally use fire [calcination]". This implies the author advocates RAW for heat. The blank likely says "Raw" again or is a typo. Given "Biao Fa Sheng Yong", "Qing Re [Sheng] Yong" is logical. I will translate as "For clearing heat, use raw"*). Do not hesitate to use it because of its cold nature, nor generally use fire (calcination) for it. Overconsumption of Baihu Tang before Start of Summer causes urinary incontinence. It is contraindicated in cases of weak stomach with Qi deficiency, and fever due to Blood deficiency. Fire blazing and Earth drying are not cured by bitter-cold agents. The Canon says: Sweet enters the Spleen first. It also says: Use sweet to purge (fire). Therefore, sweet-cold substances are the premier agents for dispelling Stomach fire and generating fluids. In Cold Damage and epidemics, where heat pathogens overflow in the Yangming Meridian, nothing else removes them. Moreover, Raw Gypsum Fibrosum is pungent and dispersing, allowing pathogens to reach the exterior through the skin. If mistakenly used with Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) and Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), which are bitter, dry, and descending, it instead causes fire pathogens to knot internally, gradually becoming incurable. Do not assume that Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Gypsum Fibrosum, Kudzu Root (Gegen), Dendrobium Stem (Chahuxi), and Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru) all clear Stomach fire identically and mix them indiscriminately. The Qi of the Stomach Meridian moves when cool and stagnates when hot. When Qi is stagnated by heat, it loses its ascending and descending commands, leading to indigestion. In such cases, use Kudzu Root (Gegen) to ascend and disperse. When evil fire lies hidden in the Qi aspect of the Yangming Meridian, use Raw Gypsum Fibrosum to diffuse it. When hot fire enters the Stomach Fu organ, ascending makes the fire fiercer, and diffusing cannot resolve the knot; use Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian) to guide it downward. Dendrobium Stem (Chahuxi) only clears deficient fire in the Stomach; Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru) specifically treats deficient phlegm in the Stomach Fu. These certainly have their appropriate uses; using them separately is the correct method.
