[Gao Liang Jiang (Alpinia Officinarum Rhizome)]
Pungent, hot. Enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridians; warms the stomach and disperses cold. Treats cold pain in the epigastrium, cholera with dysentery, cold bi-syndrome (painful obstruction due to cold), and malarial fevers caused by miasma. Combined with Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), it treats stagnation and pain in the stomach area. Combined with Fu Ling (Poria), it treats belching and regurgitation due to stomach cold. Paired with Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and pig bile, it treats spleen-deficiency cold malaria. Paired with Jing Mi (Oryza Sativa Grain), it treats abdominal pain due to cholera. Preparation: lightly stir-fried, or stir-fried with soil from the east wall, or soaked in a decoction of Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) before stir-frying. Contraindicated for diarrhea caused by summerheat injury, pain due to internal deficiency, or cases accompanied by internal heat.
[Liang Jiang Zi (Seed of Alpinia Officinarum)]
Pungent, hot. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung and Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridians. Warms the lungs and awakens the spleen, disperses cold and dries dampness, resolves alcohol toxicity, and eliminates food accumulation. Treats vomiting and diarrhea due to cholera, and severe colic in the heart and abdomen. Preparation: stir-fried with soil from the east wall, or soaked in a decoction of Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) before stir-frying. It may stir up fire leading to epistaxis (nosebleed) and damage the eyes; thus, it should not be used frequently. Contraindicated in patients with latent fire in the spleen and lungs.
[Cao Guo (Tsaoko Cardamomi Fructus)]
Also known as Cao Guo. Pungent, slightly fragrant, warm in nature. Yang, floating. Enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridians. Reaches the membrane source (Mo Yuan), breaks up stagnation, dispels cold and dries dampness, eliminates accumulation and transforms phlegm. Treats malarial fevers due to miasma, and kills toxins from fish and meat. Combined with Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), it treats malarial fevers with alternating chills and heat. (Explanation: Cao Guo treats cold dominating the Taiyin; Zhi Mu treats heat dominating the Taiyin.) Combined with Shu Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus), it treats spleen-cold malaria. (Symptoms: more chills than fever, or only chills without fever, or loose stools, frequent urination, inability to eat.) Produced in Yunnan and Guangdong, it resembles He Zi (Chebulae Fructus), with thick black skin and dense ridges, and coarse seeds with a pungent odor. Preparation: wrapped in flour, roasted over fire until cooked, skin removed, and ground for use. Contraindicated if the malaria is not due to miasma, or if qi is not deficient and pathogenic factors are not strong.
[Bai Dou Kou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus)]
Commonly called Dou Ren. Pungent, greatly warm. Taste is light, aroma is strong, texture is light and clear, ascending; Yang, floating. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Disperses stagnant qi in the chest, removes abdominal pain due to cold invasion, warms the spleen and stomach. Treats sudden onset of red eyes, removing large red veins in the inner canthus of the eye belonging to the Taiyang meridian. Yang Shiying stated: Bai Dou Kou treats spleen-deficiency malaria with vomiting and alternating chills and heat; it has the ability to digest and grind food, circulate through the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), regulate Ying and Wei (Defensive and Nutritive Qi), and thereby resolve various symptoms. Imported varieties are superior. Preparation: shell removed, lightly baked, and ground into fine powder. Contraindicated for vomiting due to rising fire, abdominal pain due to heat, and all conditions of qi deficiency.
