The Supreme Method for Childbirth When a pregnant woman reaches full term and feels slight abdominal pain, she should not immediately announce it to every household. Uninformed women entering the delivery room without checking the timing may have many people support them and urge them to exert force. Not knowing that the time has not yet arrived, exerting force is useless and may even lead to transverse or breech presentation. Later, when labor is imminent, if the mother lacks strength to push the baby down, the harm can be significant. One must recognize the sign of the birth canal swelling as the true moment; then, with one effort, the baby will be born. If the birth canal has not swollen, even if there is abdominal pain, one must try to walk to keep qi and blood flowing. If the body is weak and fatigued, and the pain is unbearable, lying in bed is acceptable. Place a large pillow between the legs to keep them open and not closed, or sitting on a toilet bucket is especially good. (From *Yao Luofu's Collected Prescriptions*)
Jisheng Formula When the fetal head has emerged but the baby does not deliver, this is because the fetus turned, and the umbilical cord caught its shoulder. Quickly have the mother lie supine, gently push the fetus upward, and slowly use fingers to press lightly on the fetal shoulder to free the umbilical cord. Wait for the fetus to align properly, then the mother exerts force once, and the baby is born. (From *Jingxiuzhai Prescriptions*)
Sulfur Decoction Specifically treats conditions where an unskilled midwife causes injury or rupture of the bladder during delivery, leading to continuous dribbling of urine. Use processed Sulfur (4 liang), Evodia Fruit and Dodder Seed (each 1.5 liang), and Cnidium Fruit (1 liang). Take 4 qian each time, decoct in water, and wash frequently until self-healed. (Same source)
Fetal Movement Pushing Upward Nuxianxidai takes effect immediately. (From *Yilin Jiyao*)
Fetal Movement Desiring Birth For those whose due date has not yet arrived, take a branch of a locust tree growing eastward, let the pregnant woman hold it in her hand, and birth will become easy. (From *Zimu Mi*)
Cui Sheng Formula Castor Seeds (14 grains, shelled), Cinnabar, Realgar (each 1.5 qian), Snake Slough (1 chi). Grind into fine powder, mix with congee paste to form pills the size of a bullet. Before childbirth, first wash below the navel with Ligusticum Decoction, insert one pill into the navel. Cover with several layers of wax paper, tie tightly with light silk. Wash off quickly after delivery; delay will cause error. One pill can be used three times. This formula is excellent for inducing labor. However, it can only be used by those who do not normally have phlegm-fire and have robust spirit. (From *Baocan Liangfang*)
Another prescription: Grind castor seeds and apply to the palms and soles of the mother. Wipe off quickly after delivery. Or, hold one seed in each hand, and birth follows immediately. (From *Cihui Xiao Bian*)
Cui Sheng Qu Tai Peel the root of Genkwa Flower, wrap in cotton, dip in Musk, insert three cun into the vaginal opening, and the placenta/fetus will descend. (From *Shesheng Miaoyong Fang*)
Cui Sheng Xia Tai Regardless of live or dead fetus, Castor Seeds and Croton Seeds (2 grains each), Musk (1 fen). Grind and apply to the navel and soles. (From *Jijian Fang*)
Jiao Gu Bu Kai During childbirth, if the pubic symphysis does not open and the baby cannot be delivered after two or three days, use equal parts of Balsam Apple Seeds, Pangolin Scales, Gleditsia Sinensis, and Musk. Grind into powder, mix with honey to make cake-like shapes. Take a piece the size of a finger, insert near the bone in the vaginal opening. Also, decoct 2-3 jin of green onions in strong soup, have the mother sit and soak in it, moving with hands. The pubic symphysis will open naturally, and the baby will be born. (From *Yixue Zhengzhuan*)
Kaigu Ointment Calcined Tortoise Shell (1 qian), Hemp Seeds (7 grains), Musk (1 fen). Pound into ointment, apply 1.3 cun below the navel at the Dantian acupoint. The pubic symphysis will open. Tested repeatedly with success. (From *Dasheng Quanbian*)
Lin Chan Yun Jue During childbirth, before the baby is born, if sudden fainting occurs, this is caused by chaotic and obstructed qi. Crush Raw Pinellia Tuber, sift through rice flour to make pills the size of soybeans, insert into the nose to awaken. This is the method of Bian Que. (From *Qiusi Mishi*)
Nanchan Actually caused by the mother's qi deficiency, leading to the inability of the fetal body to turn, resulting in hands emerging first and feet falling first. Upon seeing this type of delivery, do not panic. Chant "Wushang Zhisheng Huasheng Fo" one hundred times in the mouth, and the fetal limbs will retract immediately. (From *Shishi Mi*)
Another prescription: Soak snake slough in water, bathe the birth canal, and birth will be easy. (From *Weisheng Baojian*)
Nanchan Weiji Han Shui Shi (4 liang, 2 liang raw, 2 liang calcined/red), mixed with Cinnabar (5 qian) and ground together to a deep peach blossom color. Take 3 fen each time, mix with well water to a thin paste. Cut paper flowers apricot-leaf sized, spread the paste on them, and apply to the center of the navel. Change when dry. Within three applications, birth occurs. Effective for transverse, breech, and dead fetuses. (From *Shixiao Danfang*)
Dao Chan Ni Sheng For breech presentations where feet emerge first, this is because the fetus could not turn in the womb, hence feet come out first, called reverse birth. If not saved promptly, both mother and child die. If the mother lies supine and the midwife pushes the feet back in, one fears startling the mother, and two, if the midwife is inexperienced, it may cause death. Instead, prick the sole of the fetal foot 3-5 times with a small silk needle, apply a little salt to the pricked area, and the baby will be born smoothly immediately. (From *Gujin Luyan*)
Another prescription: Use the middle finger to take lampblack from under the pot, draw crosses on the sole of the fetal foot, and it will be smooth. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
Another prescription: Apply salt to the fetal feet, scratch with fingernails, and rub salt on the mother's abdomen, and it will be smooth. (From *Curent Tang Mi*)
Pan Chang Sheng The mother usually has qi deficiency. During childbirth, straining causes qi and blood to flow downward throughout the body, causing the intestine to follow the baby out. If this happens once, it may happen again as the path becomes familiar. To treat: place the protruding intestine in a clean, undamaged lacquerware vessel. Wait until the placenta is delivered. Have the mother lie supine, inhale deeply to lift qi internally. The midwife washes hands with sesame oil and gently pushes the intestine back in. (From *Dasheng Yaozhi*)
Another prescription: Use 49 shelled castor seeds, pound into paste, apply to the crown of the mother's head and 3 cun above the navel. Wash off once the intestine retracts. (Same source)
Another prescription: Moisten a large paper wick with sesame oil, light a lamp, blow it out, and smoke the mother's nose with the smoke. The intestine will rise. (From *Bianyi Liangfang*)
Pan Chang Sheng Intestine Dry and Unable to Retract Wash with Zhiqiao decoction; it will enter spontaneously after a while. (From *Xiuzhen Fang*)
Another prescription: Use Ginger and Pinellia powder, insufflate into the nose, and it will rise. (From *Yiliang Li Shi Kan Fang*)
Er Dai Tuo Chu Decoct Qiai (1 liang) in water, fumigate several times. The rising heat will cause retraction. (Same source)
Chan Zhi Shu Ri Zi Si Fu Zhong Mu Qi Yu Jue After several days of childbirth, if the fetus dies in the womb and the mother's qi is about to fail: Stir-fry cow dung until very hot, add half a cup of vinegar, wrap in blue cloth, and moxa/iron over the mother's navel area. Life returns immediately. (Same source)
Another prescription: Use any amount of yellow ox dung, apply to the mother's navel, and the fetus will be expelled immediately. (Same source)
Tai Si Fu Zhong Ligustica (6 qian), Angelica Sinensis Root Body (4 qian), Cinnamon Bark (3.5 qian), Angelica Sinensis Root Tail, Sappanwood, Safflower, Motherwort (each 3 qian), Peach Kernels (14 grains, crushed), Good Wine (3 zhong). Decoct medicine with wine to make one cup. Add Mercury (1 liang, chew saliva to crush mercury into stars), Powdered Talcum (3 qian), Musk (2 fen). Mix all into the medicinal wine. Boil a barrel of water, put the medicinal wine into the water, help the mother sit on the bucket to fumigate. Soon blood will discharge. If not discharged after half an hour, decoct the dregs again with 2 qian of mercury, boil 1.5 cups to 0.8 cups, strain, sprinkle mercury into the bucket, sit and fumigate. Blood will discharge soon. Fear of fainting from heavy bleeding: urgently burn old lacquerware to produce smoke, fumigate mouth and nose to awaken immediately. (From *Tongshou*)
Another prescription: Apply wet cow dung to the abdomen. Good. (From *Chanbao*)
Appendix: Test for Dead Fetus If the fetus dies in the womb, the mother's tongue must be blue-black, which is the sign. If face and tongue are blue-black, and foam comes from the mouth, both mother and child die. Thus, observe the face for the mother, and the tongue for the child. (From *Jiyin Gangmu*)
Baoyi Bu Xia Heat a clay oil lamp, place upside down on the mother's navel. Have one person hold the lamp steady with their foot. The placenta will descend. (From *Yijing*)
Another prescription: Put 1 sheng of Calcined Alum in a clean basin, pour boiling water over it. Help the mother squat over it to fumigate. It descends immediately. (From *Qifang Leibian*)
Another prescription: Take the husband's trousers, turn them inside out, waist down, leg openings up, bind around the abdomen. The placenta will descend. (From *Ruizhutang Fang*)
Baoluo Zisheng Dachang Duoxia This is extreme deficiency and sinking. The method should use Ginseng, Cimicifuga, and Bupleurum to lift. However, since the mother has just given birth and is not suitable for dispersing herbs, using Cimicifuga and Bupleurum to disperse righteous qi might scatter qi further, making intestinal retraction harder. Instead, use Castor Seeds (1 qian), pound into paste, apply to the top of the woman's head. In a short while, the intestine will retract itself. Immediately wash off the castor seeds with warm water, leaving no residue. If too much time passes, the intestine may hang suspended, becoming a critical and incurable condition. (From *QiTianshi Biezhuan*)
