Avoid excessive drunkenness. Strictly avoid medicinal wine and distilled spirits, for fear of causing confusion in the maternal mind and spirit (Shen). Even good wine should be consumed sparingly; a few cups are sufficient to invigorate blood circulation.
Avoid extreme anger. The *Zheng Su Fang* states: Pregnant women should maintain a broad-minded and compassionate disposition, with their spirit intact and qi harmonious. This not only ensures fetal stability but also results in a child who is gentle and robust, which is what the ancients referred to as prenatal education (Tai Jiao).
Avoid bathing. Do not wash the head, do not bathe the body, and do not wash the feet. These practices should be strictly prohibited as the due date approaches, as they carry significant implications and should not be taken lightly.
Avoid prolonged lying down or sitting. The *Yi Fang Miao Xuan* states: Infants suffer from fewer illnesses because their mothers, during pregnancy, exercise caution and engage in movement to circulate bones, blood, and qi. This strengthens the qi and enriches the fetus. Otherwise, the fetal qi becomes weak, resulting in a child who is physically frail and prone to illness.
Avoid carrying heavy loads and climbing heights. Carrying heavy loads causes qi stagnation and blood coagulation, while climbing heights causes qi instability and blood agitation, both of which easily damage the fetus, even without the risk of falling. Special caution is required when traveling by boat or wading through water.
Avoid medication. If a pregnant woman is free from disease, she need not take medicine. Even if there is fetal restlessness, one should consult knowledgeable individuals and invite a physician to prescribe ancient formulas with appropriate modifications. Indiscriminate use of tonifying-fetal, qi-breaking, or chest-opening drugs can cause significant harm.
Avoid shamans and sorcerers. Those eager for children often listen to shamans who claim to change the sex of the fetus, swallow talismanic water, worship evil deities, and perform rituals to exorcise demons. This agitates and confuses the maternal mind and spirit. This must be strictly avoided.
Avoid acupuncture and moxibustion. Acupuncture and moxibustion on pregnant women most easily induce abortion. Even in cases of severe illness, these treatments should be avoided. Do not heed others' advice, lest both mother and child be harmed.
Fetal crying within the pregnant woman's abdomen. This occurs when a nodule on the umbilical cord is held in the infant's mouth. When the pregnant woman reaches high to fetch an object, the nodule may slip out of the infant's mouth, causing crying. Instruct the pregnant woman to bend her waist and touch the ground, as if picking something up, so that the infant can re-insert the nodule into its mouth, stopping the crying. (From *Tong Shou*)
Alternative prescription: Take a pinch of soil from a rat hole in an abandoned house for many years, and let the pregnant woman hold it in her mouth to stop the crying. (*Chan Bao*)
Pregnant woman with "reversed uterus" (Zhuan Bao), inability to urinate, and abdominal distension like a drum. Inflate a pig bladder, attach a feather tube, insert it into the urethral opening, and blow air into the bladder by manipulating it. This will result in profuse urination and recovery. (*Wei Sheng Bao Jian*)
Pregnant woman whose fetus has dropped, compressing the bladder, causing inability to urinate, extreme distension, and critical condition. Place a strip of orange peel across a door panel. Have the pregnant woman lie supine on it with her head lower than her feet. As the fetus shifts upward, urine will flow. (*Fu Ren Liang Fang*)
Pregnant woman suffering from illness requiring termination of the fetus. Grind Strychnos nux-vomica (Ku Shi Ba Dou Er / Fan Mu Die) into a paste and insert it deep into the vagina, about three to four cun. (*Ji Jian Fang*)
Pregnant woman experiencing fetal pain and signs of labor before term. Wrap a complete shed snake skin in a silk bag and tie it around the waist. (*Qian Jin Fang*)
Febrile disease during pregnancy. Grind green sheep dung into a paste and apply it to the umbilicus to calm the fetal qi. (*Wai Tai Mi Yao*)
Protection method for the fetus against all internal and external symptoms of febrile diseases during pregnancy. Use powder from the center of the hearth fire, mix with mud from the bottom of a well, and apply to the area below the heart to prevent fetal injury. (*Yi Jian*)
Severe heat from cold-stroke (Shang Han) during pregnancy. Roll tender lotus leaves, crush them together with honeycomb powder, and apply to the abdomen. (*Yi Liang Li Shi Kan Fang*)
Protection method for the fetus during cold-stroke (Shang Han) in pregnancy. Mix powder from well-bottom mud, Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis), and Fu Long Gan (Vermilion Dragon Liver/Calcined Hearth Earth) evenly. Apply to the umbilicus for about two cun. Reapply if it dries to protect the pregnancy. (*Bao Chan Liang Fang*)
Excessive coughing during pregnancy. Remove the core of Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), stir-fry with bran until yellow, grind into powder, mix with rock sugar, and form pills the size of a broad bean. Dissolve one pill in the mouth to stop coughing immediately. (*Jing Yan Dan Fang*)
Sudden attack of wind-cold during pregnancy leading to unconsciousness resembling stroke. Stir-fry prepared Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, 3 liang) with rice vinegar until extremely hot. Wrap in silk and apply as a warm compress to the area below the umbilicus. Consciousness will return after some time. (*Ji Yin Zuan Yao*)
Cold-stroke (Shang Han) during pregnancy preventing expulsion of the fetus. Apply mud soaked in dog urine to the abdomen. Replace when dry. (*Ben Cao Gang Mu*)
