The above acupuncture methods for various diseases have remarkable effects. If pregnancy has already occurred, acupuncture and moxibustion are strictly contraindicated. This must be emphasized repeatedly. (From *Zhenjiu Jing* and *Guangsi Quanshu*)
Abstain from Intercourse After Conception: Once a woman becomes pregnant, sexual intercourse must be strictly prohibited. Hence, ancients believed that once pregnant, a woman should not share a bed with her husband, fearing it might arouse desire. Generally, if this taboo is violated within the first three months, desire arises and the uterus reopens, leading to various complications such as spotting and threatened abortion. If violated after three months, the placenta thickens, leading to difficult labor. It must be understood that lustful fire scorches the fetus, causing turbid accumulation, resulting in a pale and sluggish infant prone to sores and toxins, with dense and difficult-to-emerge pox, ultimately leading to premature death.
Abstain from Violent Anger: One must not speak evil words or use whips to beat others, as anger most injures Qi and Blood. Once Qi and Blood are injured, they cannot nourish the fetus, often leading to threatened abortion. Even if the fetus is not disturbed, the angry Qi enters the fetus, causing the child to be prone to disease.
Abstain from Indolence: Pregnancy relies on Blood to nourish and Qi to protect. The woman should move frequently to ensure the free flow of Qi and Blood throughout the body. When the womb is active, Qi becomes strong and the fetus robust. Prolonged sitting, lying down, or engaging in sedentary female work like weaving without walking or moving freely leads to stagnant Qi and unflowing Blood, causing the fetus to become stagnant and inactive, resulting in difficult labor and a weak, sickly child.
Abstain from Excessive Heat: Pregnant women should prefer slight coolness and avoid excessive warmth. Northern kang beds and southern heated rooms are unsuitable for sleeping. In cases of threatened abortion, deficiency accounts for only 20-30%, while heat accounts for 80-90%. Be cautious.
Abstain from Potent Drugs: At ten days or half a month of pregnancy, the pulse is faint and hard to distinguish; before the month is overdue, one may not even know one is pregnant. If feeling unwell, a doctor unaware of the pregnancy might mistakenly prescribe abortifacient drugs, causing great harm. Ancients said: People know about miscarriage at two or three months, but few realize how many damage the fetus within the first month.
Abstain from Fear and Shock: After conception, one should avoid being startled. Rituals involving dangerous exorcisms, or entering temples to see strange ghostly images, should be strictly avoided, so that the Liver can nurture the Hun (Ethereal Soul), preventing the implantation of fetal toxicity and fright.
Abstain from Indulgence: From three to four months of pregnancy, use a piece of cloth to bind the body tightly to prevent the fetus from becoming too loose, which could lead to difficult labor.
Prevent Miscarriage: Between three and five months of pregnancy, sudden injury to the uterine organ or rotting of the fetal ligament can cause the fetus to fall, known as a miscarriage (spontaneous abortion). This is more severe than term delivery. Term delivery is like a ripe melon falling from the vine; a miscarriage is like picking an unripe fruit, breaking its shell and severing its root. Neglecting this leads to many deaths. All care must follow postpartum protocols.
Regulate Spleen and Stomach: A healthy body and sufficient Qi and Blood depend on harmonious Spleen and Stomach and regulated diet. For pregnant women, the Spleen and Stomach are especially critical. The fetal origin relies entirely on Qi and Blood for nourishment, which are generated by the Spleen and Stomach from food and drink. Irregular diet damages the Spleen and Stomach; combined with emotional injury, Qi and Blood deplete, leading to rampant Phlegm-Fire, morning sickness, and epilepsy. Thus, wise physicians prioritize regulating the Spleen and Stomach upon seeing disharmony, addressing other symptoms subsequently. During months 2-3 and 6-7, appetite may decline; consuming small amounts of fragrant food can support Stomach Qi. New rice/flour and sticky/hard-to-digest foods severely damage the fetal origin and must be avoided. Do not eat until fully stuffed; eating 60-70% full, in frequent small meals, is key to regulating the Spleen and Stomach. (From *Taichan Zhayao*)
Pregnancy Dietary Taboos: After conception, certain foods must be strictly avoided, not only due to the risk of disturbing fetal Qi, but also based on inherent properties. Various theories are compiled below.
Eating horse meat causes post-term birth. If the wet nurse eats it, the child suffers from malnutrition and emaciation. (*Six Sounds Bencao*)
Eating donkey or mule meat prolongs pregnancy and causes difficult labor. (*Daily Use Bencao*)
Eating elk meat causes eye disease in the child. (*Food Therapy Bencao*)
Eating dog meat causes the child to be mute. (*Bencao Gangmu*)
Eating mutton causes the child to have excessive heat. (*Renshou Ji*)
Eating sheep liver causes the child to face many misfortunes. (*Sun Taoren Food Taboos*)
Eating rabbit meat causes cleft lip in the child. (*Bencao Shiyi*)
Eeating sparrow brain causes night blindness in the child. (*Shengsheng Bian*)
Eating sparrow meat causes shamelessness and promiscuity in the child. (*Guangsi Quanshu*)
Eating sparrow meat with bean paste causes black spots on the child's face. (Ibid.)
Eating chicken with glutinous rice causes tapeworms in the child. (Ibid.)
Eating chicken with eggs causes sores in the child. (*Youke Zhiinan*)
Eating duck with mulberry causes breech presentation and cold heart in the child. (*Qiusi Mishi*)
Eating abalone causes frequent illness in the child. (Ibid.)
Eating carp with eggs causes boils and sores in the child. (Ibid.)
Eating eel causes disease in the fetus. (*Yijian Zhi*)
Eating eel with toad (or frog) causes [symptom missing] in the child. (*Sanyuan Yanshou Shu*)
Eating turtle causes short neck and fetal damage in the child. (*Zhang Ding Food Therapy*)
Eating frog causes premature death in the child. (*Qianjin Food Therapy*)
Eating crab damages the fetus, causes difficult labor, and breech presentation in the child. (*Mengshi Youke*)
Eating colocasia reduces fetal Qi. (*Rihua Bencao*)
Eating pepper, scallion, garlic, and Evodia poison the fetus. (*Tongshou Lu*)
Eating sticky and fried foods damages the fetus. (Ibid.)
Eating eggplant damages the uterus. (*Shijian Bencao*)
Eating ginger causes sores on the fingertips of the child's hands and feet. (*Bencao Tongyuan*)
Eating red amaranth, purslane, coix seed, patchouli, and navel fish causes miscarriage. (Ibid.)
Eating mushrooms causes convulsions and premature death in the child. (*Danxi Buyi*)
Drinking liquor and Sanbai wine causes sores, boils, and pox in the child. (*Zengding Qiuzi Lu*)
Drinking sour water porridge causes bone-thin failure to thrive in the child. (*Tao Shi Bie Lu*)
Eating ice sauce causes sterility. (Ibid.)
All these are verified. If the mother eats hot foods, the milk becomes hot; if she eats cold foods, the milk becomes cold. If she eats pungent and dry foods, the milk becomes toxic. The child suffers from these. How can one not be cautious? How can one not abstain?
