According to the *Daoist Scriptures*: Sexual intercourse between men and women requires strict avoidance of taboos. If one violates these prohibitions, Heaven will shorten their lifespan, and deities will bring calamity. This may result in children with ugly or strange appearances, bad character and conduct, physical disabilities, or premature death. There is clear evidence for this. It is advised that those seeking offspring record these dates on small pieces of paper and paste them on the wall. On every taboo day, one should strictly observe these rules. (Referencing *Seed Heart Method*, see also *True Guide to Praying for Heirs*).
Also avoid "Ku Jiao Ri" (Withered and Scorched Days): First Month (Chen), Second Month (Chou), Third Month (Xu), Fourth Month (Wei), Fifth Month (Mao), Sixth Month (Zi), Seventh Month (You), Eighth Month (Wu), Ninth Month (Yin), Tenth Month (Hai), Eleventh Month (Shen), Twelfth Month (Si).
Poem says: "Nine Emptinesses, Scorched Kan Day, Withered and Scorched; Marriage and seeking sons forbid this night."
It is said: "Universally advising people to know and avoid taboos, why worry about the jade tree (metaphor for excellent descendants) not sprouting branches?"
Also avoid sexual intercourse at inappropriate times and places.
Intercourse during the day (details unknown), under starlight or moonlight, under lamplight (reduces fortune and lifespan), during fierce winds and thunderstorms (shortens life, produces evil fetus), in extreme heat or cold (leads to serious illness). In temples, near wells and stoves, beside toilets, or near coffins and graves (evil spirits may incarnate, harming life and health). On the birthdays or death anniversaries of ancestors and parents (shortens life by one year). On the birthdays or destiny days of husband and wife (brings disaster and illness). In states of depression or anger (great anger damages the Liver, leading to illness), after long journeys (intercourse after traveling 100 li causes illness; traveling 100 li after intercourse leads to death), while drunk (damages the Five Zang Organs), on an empty stomach (damages Yuan Shen/Essential Spirit), before pregnancy (damages the fetus, causing difficult labor), after childbirth (causes many illnesses in women within 100 days), during menstruation (harms both man and woman), after illness (illness changes and fails to recover). All these violations bring severe retribution.
If one can be cautious in living arrangements, maintain a pure heart and few desires, strictly wait for the right time, why worry about not having heirs? This is warned to those who do not know the taboos. (Referencing *Collection for Preserving Life*)
