Skinless at Birth: When an infant is born with red and white skin missing, immediately dust the affected areas with dry white rice flour. Continue until new skin grows. For any areas under the ribs, between toes, or in shoulder bends that are red, ulcerated, and skinless, causing frequent crying, burn cow dung to ash while preserving its medicinal properties, grind it into an extremely fine powder, and sprinkle it on the affected area for immediate cure. (From *Chuanjia Bao*)
Immobility at Birth: If an infant is born immobile, quickly inspect the oral cavity. If there are blisters known as "Xuan Yong" (Hanging Abscess), puncture them immediately with a finger. Wrap the finger in silk, squeeze out fluids, and wipe away blood completely; the infant will revive. If blood enters the abdomen, survival is impossible. (Ibid.)
Failure to Cry: An infant born without vocalization is termed "Meng Sheng" (Dream Born), likely caused by difficult labor or cold exposure. Immediately wrap the infant in cotton wadding, hold the infant inside a cup, and do not sever the umbilical cord. Quickly ignite the placenta along with the cord using paper soaked in oil. Smoke and heat the cord repeatedly until warmth penetrates the abdomen through the navel. After a moment, when breath returns and the body warms, the infant will cry normally. If the infant remains silent after warming, take a cat, wrap its head and feet in cloth, have a woman bring the cat near the infant's ear, and bite the cat's ear sharply. The cat's sudden cry will startle the infant awake, restoring voice and life. (Ibid.)
Eyes Unopened: Infants whose eyes do not open at birth are often due to the pregnant woman's unregulated diet, specifically excessive consumption of rich and pungent foods, leading to heat-toxin steaming and accumulation in the fetal spleen. Since eyelids belong to the spleen and their meridians are tight, they cannot open. Use Bear Bile and Coptis Rhizome (Coptidis Rhizoma) (small amounts each), rinse with boiling water, and the eyes will naturally open. (From *Quanyou Xinjian*)
Blindness: Infants born with red, swollen, and ulcerated eyes that cannot open can be treated by applying earthworm mud to the fontanelle. Replace when dry; three applications suffice for a cure. (From *Shao Shi Chuan Fang*)
Another method: Use Aconitum Lateralare Preparatum (Arisaema Cum Bile) and Rheum Palmatum (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts), grind into powder, mix with vinegar, and apply to both soles. Effective regardless of whether within or after one month. (Ibid.)
Failure to Nurse: If a newborn cannot nurse due to tight swaddling or other causes, slice a single-clove garlic thinly and place it on both cheeks. Apply moxibustion; if the infant cries, it is cured. If no cry, ineffective. (From *Baoyou Yaomiao*)
Vomiting Milk: Amomum Fructus (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) and Alpinia Katsumadai Seed (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus) (14 grains each), Raw Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Roasted Licorice Root (2 qian each). Grind into powder and frequently sprinkle into the infant's mouth to stop vomiting. (From *Weishi Defang*)
Persistent Vomiting and Coughing: Stone Swallow (Swallow Stone) ground into powder, mixed with honey, applied to lips 3-5 times daily. (From *Wei Sheng Bao Jian*)
[Missing Character] Milk: Infants with phlegm-fire may swell in the cheeks and lose appetite after a few days of nursing, a condition called [Missing Character] Milk. Use Mint Leaf (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and Mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas) ground into powder, applied 1-2 times for cure. (From *Shenji Chu Yan*)
Saliva Spitting and Cold Limbs: This symptom presents with bubble-like formations on the gums, sized like millet grains. Wrap a finger in soft cotton, dip in warm liquid, and wipe; the infant will open the mouth and calm down. (From *Baoying Jiyao*)
[Missing Character] Cheek: Newborns with hard, nodular swelling in the cheeks, either localized or widespread, named [Missing Character] Cheek. Symptoms include yellow complexion, small scrofula nodules at the nose tip, crying, and refusal to nurse. Crush one slug (or several small ones) with a small amount of Vermilion (Cinnabaris), apply externally to the swelling without wiping off, and it will subside. (Ibid.)
Alternative method: Mix a small amount of Mulberry Branch Ash with 2-3 drops of Rooster Comb Blood and a spoonful of Salted Brine. Apply frequently to the affected area. Alternatively, incise to remove white masses and membranes, then clean with saliva-moistened cotton. Caution: improper cutting may cause harm. (From *Zengding Dasheng Bian*)
Double Gum: Swelling of the upper palate resembling a water-filled sac is called Double Gum. Swelling of the gum bed is also called Double Gum. Puncture with a large needle to bleed, then apply Polygonum Multiflorum Root (Polygoni Multiflori Radix) powder. (From *Youke Tiejing*)
Horse Teeth: White spots appearing on the roof of the mouth and gums in newborns are called Horse Teeth. They prevent nursing; delay leads to death. Urgently puncture the spots with a heated needle until blood appears. Wipe blood with bloody cotton. Rinse with Mint decoction and apply Gold Ink solution. Withhold milk/food for one hour before resuming nursing. (From *Quanying Xinfa*)
Double Tongue: After opening the mouth, if a membrane resembling a stone is seen under the tongue (Double Tongue) preventing crying, prick the lingual frenulum gently with a fingernail or needle until blood flows. Apply mulberry branch juice mixed with Polygonum Multiflorum Root powder. If bleeding is excessive, apply hair ash mixed with lard. (Ibid.)
Double Tongue Swelling and Stiffness: Apply Fulonggan (Patio Collutum) powder mixed with Arctium Juice. (From *Shenghui Fang*)
Double Tongue Near Death: Apply hair ash (5 fen) under the tongue continuously. (From *Jianyao Jizhong*)
Wooden Tongue: Caused by heat accumulation in the Heart and Spleen. The spleen's meridians run under the tongue, and the tongue is the sprout of the Heart. Fire rushing upward causes the tongue to swell, become stiff like wood, and immobile. Treat with Mirabilite (5 fen), Zhen Zixue (True Purple Snow - a complex formula), and Salt (1 fen), ground fine, mixed with Bamboo Sap, and applied to the tongue. Urgent treatment is required to avoid fatal outcomes. (From *Baochi Zhengzong*)
Another formula: Huangshu Kui Hua (Malvae Sieversianae Flos) (1 qian) and Minium (Lithargyri) (5 fen), ground and applied. (From *Zhizhi Fang*)
Wooden Tongue Swelling and Rigidity: Alum (Bai Fan) and Cinnamon Bark (Gui Xin) (equal parts), ground and placed under the tongue. (From *Puji Fang*)
White Membrane Covering Tongue: Newborns with a white membrane covering the tongue or root. Scratch with fingernails to induce bleeding. Apply half a mung bean size of calcined alum powder. Failure to scratch may result in muteness. (From *Zhibao Fang*)
Locked Mouth: Infants under seven days old with locked mouth, often untreatable if neglected. Symptoms include millet-sized sores on the tongue, inability to suckle, and diminishing cries, caused by fetal heat. Administer Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang) powder dissolved in Light Bamboo Liquid (Dan Zhuli). Also drip pig milk. (From *Waitai Mi Yao*)
Goat Mouth (Thrush): White coating covering the entire mouth, resembling a goose's mouth, commonly called Snow Mouth. Caused by heat-toxin from maternal diet accumulating in the Heart and Spleen meridians during gestation. Internal origin is treatable; external invasion is not. Apply filtered juice from manure of grass-eating white geese mixed with sugar. Alternatively, use male goose manure ash mixed with Musk. Effect is miraculous. (From *Yonglei Qianfang*)
Pinched Mouth and Umbilical Wind: Within seven days of birth, red face, rapid breathing, and inability to cry indicate Pinched Mouth and Umbilical Wind. Check gums for millet-sized blisters. Dip finger wrapped in soft cloth in warm water with Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), rub to break blisters for cure. (From *Baosheng Suishi*)
Alternative: Place a coin-sized piece of Sophora Tree Bark on the navel, surround with dough and honey, and moxa-burn. Cure upon first cry. (From *Chuanxin*)
Alternative: Slice single-clove garlic, place on navel, and moxa-burn. (From *Yiliang Li Shi Kan Fang*)
Umbilical Swelling: Wash with Schizonepeta Decoction. Heat a green onion leaf, remove fire heat, scrape thin, and apply to swelling. Subsides next day. (Ibid.)
Umbilical Swelling with Discharge: Dust with warmed Bai Shizhi (Halloysit Rubrum) powder, three times daily, do not disturb. (From *Weizhou Duxing Fang*)
Alternative: Apply ash of calcined Alum. (From *Shengji Fang*)
Umbilical Discharge Not Drying: Stir-fried Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi) ground fine, applied to dry discharge instantly. Highly effective. (From *Shishi Milu*)
Umbilical Cord Non-healing: Apply Fulonggan (Patio Collutum) or Angelica Powder. (From *Jingxiuzhai Fang*)
Umbilical Protrusion: Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou), Fermented Soybean (Dandouchi), Pinellia Tuber (Tiannanxing, peeled), and Ampelopsis Radix (Bailian) (1 qian each). Grind fine. Take 5 fen, mix with juice from crushed Banana Leaf, apply around navel twice daily. Cure when navel shrinks and turns white. (From *Baoyizi Fang*)
Alternative: Burn severed umbilical cord with Mugwort Ash, mix with Oil Red Paint, and apply. (From *Qiankun Shengyi*)
Umbilical Ulceration (Critical with continuous fluid loss): Apply Chishizhi (Red Halloysite) powder for instant cure. (From *Zhangshi Lvyan Fang*)
Umbilical Ulcer Non-healing: Burn white lamb parts (Yang Zi) to ash, apply. Or use calcined Alum and Dragon Bone (Longgu), ground and applied. (From *Ye Tianshi Fang*)
Purple Wandering Wind: Rhubarb (Dahuang), Mirabilite (Puxiao), and Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai) (3 qian each). Grind, mix with water, apply to affected area. (From *Sichengtang Kan Fang*)
Red Wandering Erysipelas: Infants within one month suddenly develop red-purple cloud-like patches, flat or raised. Rapid cases spread whole body in one day; slow cases spread gradually. Invasion towards the heart is fatal. Ancient method: Apply Jin Zhi (Gold Juice from feces). If unavailable, find 4-5 earthworms in feces, clean them, cut open with bamboo knife to extract juice. Gently prick erysipema with bowl edge, apply worm juice. Self-cures. Test proven. Do not wash off due to smell; wait until redness subsides and full recovery before washing. (From *Duansuzhai Yanfang*)
Daytime Crying Non-stop: Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang) and refined Cinnabar (Chensha Fei) (5 li powder each). Apply to infant's tongue to stop crying instantly. (From *Baochi Xu Zhi*)
Night Crying: Newborn night crying stems from Heart deficiency with heat. Use exorcism methods: hide grass from well surroundings under mattress. Write father's name upside down on bed leg. Beat surroundings with peach wood stick while chanting: "Sky is grey, Earth is yellow, baby night crying leaves the hall." Repeat to stop crying. (From *Yi Jing*)
Alternative: Apply chicken manure to navel. Excellent. Male infants use female chicken, female infants use male chicken. (From *Guangsi Quanshu*)
Night Crying with Internal Pulling: First wash abdomen with Scallion Decoction. Then heat Moxa wool, wrap, and moxa-burn navel/abdomen ten times to relieve pain. (From *Youke Tiejing*)
Urinary Retention: Newborn urinary retention is due to fetal heat flowing downward. Mash Fermented Soybean (1 scoop), Fresh Water Snail (19 pieces), and Green Onion (1 bunch). Mix with Banana Juice, apply to navel to restore urination. (From *Baoyou Liangfang*)
Fecal Impaction: Fecal impaction results from fetal heat-toxin blocking the anus. Have a woman rinse mouth with warm water and perform suction/massage on anterior/posterior chest, palms, soles, and below navel (7 points) until skin reddens. Bowels will open shortly. (Ibid.)
Total Urinary and Fecal Retention: On days 2-3 of life, mix equal parts Scallion Juice and Human Milk, smear in mouth to restore passage. (From *Yizong Shuo Yue*)
Rectal Prolapse: Wash with Scallion Soup, apply Banana Leaf. (From *Danfang Quanji*)
Scrotal Swelling: Newborns with large testes risk developing Wood Hernia later. If past one month, wait for Dragon Boat Festival noon. Fill basin with hot water in main hall. Immerse infant.
