For retained placenta (Bao Yi Bu Xia), hold the infant securely and do not sever the umbilical cord abruptly. Have a dexterous elderly woman use her right index and middle fingers to press closely along the surface of the umbilical cord. At the end of the cord, insert the fingers upward by half a cun; if blood is felt, this indicates the placenta. Because the placenta has inverted, blood is trapped inside preventing expulsion. Press down on the placenta with the finger; as the blood flows out, the inverted placenta will naturally follow and descend. This method is very simple. Often, due to retained placenta, many take medications to assist, or induce vomiting. Worse still, some push against the abdomen with their feet, which can lead to death or severe illness. They fail to realize that the reason for the retained placenta is that after the infant passes through the birth canal, once the umbilical cord is cut, the placenta inevitably inverts upwards. Filthy blood drips down and fills the placenta; when the placenta is full of blood, it cannot descend. How could medication alone be effective? Let this serve as a warning to the world to avoid such disasters. (*Lu Zhu Tang Ji Yan Fang*)
