Simple Emergency Measures: Whenever residing in impoverished rural villages, if an infant contracts smallpox and a physician cannot be summoned, when the infant has only a slight fever, dip your hand in pure sesame oil and massage the back along the spine down to the coccyx. Repeat this several times, and the fever will subside naturally. (From *Qiusi Mishu*)
Bathing to Prevent Smallpox: On the evening of New Year's Eve, boil one large black carp or two to three smaller ones in water. Warm a closed room thoroughly and bathe the infant in this decoction, ensuring all seven orifices are washed. Do not mind the fishy smell; rinse off with clean water afterward. If you doubt its efficacy, leave one hand or foot unwashed; when smallpox appears, the unwashed area will have significantly more lesions. This prescription was passed down by an extraordinary person. (From *Yifang Jiangyao*)
Infant Protection and Acne Prevention: For infants of either gender, select plump, smooth Sichuan quinine fruits (*Chuanlianzi*). Infants aged one to three years use seven fruits. Pound them in a mortar (avoid iron tools), add one bowl of water, and simmer in a new clay pot until thick. Pour into a basin. In a wind-free area, dip a piece of new white cotton cloth into the liquid and wipe the infant from head to toe, leaving no spot untouched. Dry with the cloth and keep away from wind for a moment. For ages four to five, use nine fruits and five bowls of water. For ages six to seven, use fifteen fruits and seven bowls of water. For ages eight to ten, use twenty fruits and nine bowls of water. For ages eleven to fifteen, use thirty fruits and fifteen bowls of water. Prepare and wash as described above. This not only prevents smallpox but also avoids sores and boils. Washing should be done on specific days (1st, 7th, 17th, 27th of the lunar month) seven times a day. It is even better if performed between May and August. (From *Wangshi Chuanfang*)
Smallpox Difficult to Erupt Initially: Decoct *Coriandri Fructus* (Sanqi, 芫荽子) three taels heavily. Spray the decoction onto the infant's bed curtains several times; the scent helps the eruption. (From *Sichengtang Kanfang*)
Critical Condition at Seven to Eight Days Without Eruption: Collect duckweed (*Zonglu*, 浮萍) from water, regardless of quantity. Wrap in fine green cloth, squeeze out the juice, and administer orally to the infant. Immediate effect is observed. (From *Xianianzu Jianyifang*)
Full Body Ulceration with Pus Flow: Use abundant tea leaves, removing coarse stems. Boil briefly, remove, and discard stems again. Lay the wet leaves on the bed, cover with a layer of coarse paper, and let the infant lie on it. The pus will dry naturally. This is a secret recipe. (Ibid.)
Thin Crusts and Itching: Grind *Atractylodis Rhizoma* (Cangzhu, 苍术) from Maoshan into powder. Roll in paper and fumigate everywhere. (From *Guixuan Sui*)
Shen Deng Zhao (Treating Extreme Itching and Collapse): Mix *Zanthoxyli Fructus* (Chuanjiao, 川椒), *Artemisiae Argyi Folium* (Aiye, 艾叶), *Jujubae Fructus* (Hongzao, 红枣), *Coriandri Fructus* (Yuansu, 芫荽), *Artemisiae Capillaris Herba* (Yinchen, 茵陈), *Boswelliae Resina* (Ruxiang, 乳香), *Angelicae Dahuricae Radix* (Baizhi, 白芷), *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium* (Chenxiangyuan, 陈香圆), and *Benzoinum* (Anshixiang, 安息香). Grind into powder, form into paper wicks, ignite, and fumigate/illuminate. (From *Yetianshi Fang*)
Bai Luo San (Treating Scratched Lesions): *Concha Melaniae* (Bailuos, 白螺蛳) (any amount) and *Borneolum Syntheticum* (Pian Nao, 片脑) (a little). Mix with sesame oil and apply to the affected area for cure. (Ibid.)
Smallpox in Eyes: Grind fresh ivory in water and drip into the eyes; lesions recede. (Ibid.)
Alternative Method: Prick a drop of blood from the middle finger of the infant's mother and drip into the eyes; lesions move away. (From *Duansuzhai Yanfang*)
Alternative Method: Mix *Carthami Flos* (Honghua/Zhiyan, 胭脂) with egg white and apply around the eyes to prevent entry. (From *Jixiao Fang*)
Depressed Pustules with Stagnant Fluid: Use branches and leaves of *Populus davidiana* (Shuiyang, 水杨). If no leaves, use tender branches (five jin). Boil in a cauldron of running water for a warm bath. Add hot water if it cools. After some time, observe if raised rings with halo-like threads appear, indicating fluid movement. If not full, bathe again. For deficient patients, wash only head, face, hands, and feet. If still depressed after repeated bathing, death ensues. Do not bathe during initial eruption or severe itching/collapse. (From *Bencao Congxin*)
Moist Ulceration Without Scabbing: Soak mung beans and adzuki beans in good vinegar until soft, pound to extract juice. Brush the affected area frequently with a goose feather. Alternatively, apply dry mung bean powder. (From *Jingyan Guangji*)
Alternative Method: Stir-fry black beans to fine powder, mix with sesame oil, and apply. (From *Baiyi Fang*)
Ulcers Difficult to Heal: Wash old rotting thatch from walls, bake into powder, and sprinkle. Its cold nature detoxifies, and exposure to frost/snow aids drying dampness. Effective for chickenpox turning into sores. (From *Chenwenzhong Fang*)
Generalized Ulceration with Dripping Pus: Grind dry green moss from walls into extremely fine powder and apply. (From *Bixiao Fang*)
Larvae in Ulcers: Spread tender willow leaves on the mat for the infant to lie on; larvae exit, and healing occurs. (From *Chengshi Xu Jide Fang*)
Recurrence After Healing: Clean kiln bricks, grind to powder, mix with sesame oil, and apply for recession. (From *Yiliang Lishi Kanfang*)
Pale, Flat, or Poorly Developed Lesions: Decoct coriander in wine, steam the fumes over the infant. Apply wine to the body to promote bright, healthy growth. Do not apply to head/face. Sprinkle wine in the room to dispel foul odors. (From *Tongshou*)
Black Lesions: Pierce with a needle, apply white sap from *Taraxaci Radix* (Pugongying, 蒲公英) roots. Applying paste is even better. (From *Guangli Fang*)
Post-Scab Bathing Prescription: *Angelicae Sinensis Radix* (Danggui, 当归), *Sophorae Flavescentis Radix* (Kushen, 苦参), *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (Gancao, 甘草) (each five qian). Decoct and bathe warmly. Avoid wind after bathing. If remote and medicine unavailable, bean husks can be used. (From *Douzhen Xinfa*)
