Pounded into a paste together, apply to the affected area. Replace if it dries out. After one week, if not yet suppurated, it will dissipate; if already suppurated, slight discharge of pus leads to recovery. (From *Tong Shou*)

Mix evenly with genuine rice vinegar. Apply around the affected area, leaving the head of the sore uncovered. (Ibid.)
[Moxibustion Method for Swelling and Toxins] For all initial swellings and malignant sores where the head is difficult to identify, first cover with wet paper. The place that dries first is the head of the carbuncle. Take a single-clove garlic, peel it, and slice it to a thickness of about 2 qian. Place it on the head of the carbuncle. Pierce a hole in the center. Place a moxa cone on the garlic slice and moxibustate three zhuang. Replace with a new garlic slice. If painful, moxibustate until pain ceases; if not painful, moxibustate until extreme pain occurs; if painful, moxibustate until itching occurs; if itching, moxibustate until pain occurs, then stop. Failure to follow this method may cause great harm. Remember well. Moxibustion is strictly forbidden for toxins located on the head or at the Shenshu acupoint (BL-23), and for individuals with severely deficient Yuan Qi (Original Qi). If garlic is unavailable during moxibustation, substitute with sliced fresh ginger. (From *Gu Fang*)

Pus exudes through pores. Cover with straw paper, replace when wet. Once fluid stops and paper dries, swelling subsides. If pus does not exit through pores, make a small incision beside the patch; pus will naturally drain. Tested on several people with repeated success. (Ibid.)
