Dyeing Beard and Hair Black: Take one piece of birch bark, wrap it around one branch of Platycladi Cacumen (Platycladus orientalis), ignite it to produce smoke, and let the smoke condense into soot within a bowl of sesame oil. Blackening Hair: Take a block of high-quality ink, fill it into the thick stem of Impatiens balsamina (Balsam flower), tie it tightly externally with hemp thread. After the frost descends, take it out and grind it into ink. Pluck out white hairs, apply this ink, and they will naturally turn black. (From *Qifang Leibian*)
Another method: Use ancient ink and Mother Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) in equal parts, mix well with good vinegar to form an ink stick. For use, take a small amount of ginger juice, dip a new brush, pluck out the white hairs, and dot them; they will turn black immediately. (Ibid.)
