Sudden swelling of the throat and pharynx with inability to eat or drink: Apply a paste made of rice vinegar and Huangbai powder (Phellodendri Cortex) externally; replace immediately when it cools. (From *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)
Swelling and pain of the throat and pharynx: Soak Yazao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, peeled) in rice vinegar, roast it seven times without burning it too much, grind into powder, and blow a small amount into the throat. Stop once saliva is expectorated. (From *Shengji Zonglu*)
Another prescription: Use Shandougen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix), three qian, ground with vinegar to extract juice; hold in the mouth. Cure upon expectoration of saliva. (From *Doumen Fang*)
Swelling and ulceration of the throat and pharynx: Take Pengsha (Borax), Xuanmingfen (Mirabilite), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), each one qian, and Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), one fen. Grind all into fine powder. Blow five or six fen into the throat using a paper tube for immediate relief. If caused by epidemic pathogenic factors, add Xionghuang (Realgar), three fen, and Zhusha (Cinnabar), five fen; this is invariably effective. (From *Qingpu Li Shi Kan Fang*)
Throat swelling with complete obstruction, unable to swallow even a spoonful of water: Take Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), one piece, and Poguozhi (Psoraleae Fructus), five qian. Grind into powder, mix with water to form a paste-like plaster. Spread on cloth to the size of a tea cup. Apply to the center of the sole of the foot. Warm with fire for one shichen (two hours). The throat will then relax and open a passage, allowing medication to be taken. (From *Leigong Huoren Shu*)
Emergency treatment for Houfeng (wind-stroke of the throat): Take several wall nests, bake dry on tiles, grind finely, and blow into the affected area. Blood disperses, phlegm dissipates, and cure is immediate. (From *Chuanjiabao*)
Chanhoufeng (strangling wind-stroke of the throat): Chanhoufeng refers to heat accumulation in the throat, swelling surrounding the exterior, accompanied by numbness and itching. Burn Qianniu nose rope to ash and blow into the throat; highly effective. (From *Li Shizhen Fang*)
Another prescription: Take one Danbaimei (white plum, pitted), embed one Yanyou (land slug) inside, and hold in the mouth for cure. (From *Jixiao Fang*)
Excellent and instantly effective prescription for Chanhoufeng and Shuangru'e (double tonsillar abscess): Take one Maoke (nest) from an elm tree. Cut the fingernails and toenails of the patient. For left-sided ru'e, cut nails from the left hand and foot; for right-sided, cut from the right hand and foot; for bilateral, cut all. Place a small amount of salt into the nest. Burn to ash, grind to powder, and blow into the lesion. Pat the back of the neck with fingers: if on the left, pat left; if on the right, pat right; if bilateral, pat both sides. The abscess will rupture immediately, expelling phlegm and blood. (From *Wang Kentang Fang*)
Tongguan San (for treating Ru'e and all heat-toxin conditions in the throat): Take Danfan (Alumen), two qian, and Pengsha (Borax), one qian. Grind into powder, place inside a Qingyu dan (bile of grass carp), dry in shade, grind extremely fine. Add Shandougen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix), one qian. Store in porcelain. Blow into the affected area; cure upon expectoration of saliva. (From *Qifang Leibian*)
Ru'e and Houbi (throat obstruction): Take Wulongwei (dust hanging upside down on beams), Kufan (Alumen calcined), and Zhuyazaojia (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus). Stir-fry with salt until yellow (equal parts). Grind into powder. Apply by blowing or dabbing; both methods are excellent. (From *Binhu Fang*)
Zoumahoubi (running-horse throat obstruction): Dip an goose feather into Dengwoyou (lamp wick oil) and sweep the affected area. Elicit vomiting for effectiveness. (From *Su Shen Liangfang*)
Houxuan and Houfeng: Take Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) powder and Baicaoshuang (soot from hundred herbs), each five fen; two Xiong'e dan (goose bile); five Qingyu dan (grass carp bile preserved with Alumen); one liang of Maoke containing insects (burned to retain properties). Grind into fine powder and blow into the throat. (From *Chuanxin*)
When various medicines for throat and pharynx fail: Danxi stated: This is not a throat disease, but a red line growing in the nose, resembling a black blister suspended by a hair, as large as a cherry pit, hanging down to the entrance of the pharynx. Food and drink cannot enter the mouth. Take a single, thick root of Tuniuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), crush it, add three to five drops of good vinegar, grind finely, and drip two or three drops into the nose. The "bead" will break immediately, expelling stasis blood, bringing instant relief. (From *Chishui Xuanzhu*)
Nasal fumigation method: For throat closure where decoctions cannot pass and solid food is hard to swallow, use invisible qi entering through the nose. Press Baiduo (Crotonis Fructus) oil onto paper, roll the oiled paper into a strip, light it like a candle, extinguish it, and use the smoke to fumigate the nose. This induces salivation from the mouth and nose, causing the jaw to open naturally. (From *Lei'an*)
Throat puncture method: For Ru'e and related conditions located at the upper gate (soft palate/uvula area), there must be blood blisters. Puncture them with a throat needle or bamboo tube for immediate relief. If not visible at the lower gate (lower throat), it is difficult to treat. Sharpen a reed tube. Have the patient hold a mouthful of water. Insert the tube through the nostril, strike once to induce bleeding; this is very effective. (From *Huibu*)
Puncturing Shaoshang Acupoint and inducing vomiting method: Throat diseases kill most rapidly. In emergency rescue, vigorously rub the patient's arms dozens of times to gather blood in the thumbs. Tie the base of the thumb tightly with an oil-coated hair tie. Puncture the Shaoshang acupoint (located on the radial side of the thumb, one fen from the nail corner) to bleed, similar to bloodletting (Fashasha). Do this on both hands. For severe cases, puncture all ten fingers. Meanwhile, use a goose feather dipped in Tung oil or lamp oil to tickle the throat to induce vomiting and expel phlegm-saliva. Immediately drink fresh radish juice; the throat will relax naturally. Alternatively, use Alum soup to induce vomiting, which is also good. (From *Jingyan Ji Fang*)
Appendix: Differentiated treatment methods: If chills, aversion to wind, headache, and fever are felt at the onset, this indicates exterior pathogenic factors. Suanse (acid-astringent) medicines like Alum soup are contraindicated. Plums are especially taboo; misusing acid-astringents makes recovery difficult. If no exterior pathogen exists, Yanyou and plums may be used, but it is better to drink fresh radish juice from the beginning. To prevent recurrence of Houbi, chew a few slices of raw radish morning and evening. (Same source)
