Treats the condition where Shen Shui (aqueous humor and pupil dilation) is wide and gradually scatters, or accompanied by visual floaters ("empty flowers"). It also treats conditions where Heart Fire overacts on Lung Metal, causing Kidney Water to weaken and be counter-controlled, as well as chronic diseases that recur repeatedly. After taking the medicine, if one sees stars or moonlight when looking upward, this confirms its efficacy.
Formula: Cishi (Magnetitum, 2 liang, calcined with fire and quenched in vinegar seven times), Zhusha (Cinnabaris, 1 liang), Sheng Shenqu (Raw Fermented Wheat Mass, 8 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder together. Separately, take 1 liang of Shenqu, boil it to make a paste for binding, and form pills the size of sophora seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, administered with rice water on an empty stomach.
Treats various types of corneal opacities (Xing Zhang), pterygium (Rou), blurred vision of the pupil (Tong Shen Hun Hua), and trichiasis with curled eyelashes (Quan Mao Dao Sheng).
Formula: Luganshi (Calamina, select those light in texture, free of impurities, resembling sheep's brain; use 4 liang, quench five times in Sanhuang Tang [Decoction of Three Yellows], grind into extremely fine powder, use 1 liang 3 qian), Huangdan (Minium, refined to remove earth, take 4 li), Fenqing (Calomel, genuine, 3 qian 4 li), Baijiangdan (White Sublimate, 3 qian 4 li), Xiongdan (Ursi Bile, amount unspecified in fragments), Zhenzhu (Margarita), Hupo (Succinum, each 5 fen).
Each ingredient should be ground thousands of times until dust-like. Add 4 liang of honey, boil several times to remove foam, cook thoroughly, and filter cleanly through silk cloth. Take 3 liang of the filtered liquid, place in a bowl, and simmer over a double boiler using moderate heat. Stir constantly with a willow twig until the mixture turns purple, forms beads when dropped in water, does not stick when pinched, and draws threads when pulled; this indicates the correct consistency. Remove from heat, gradually add the mineral powders, stir evenly, and form pills. If the honey is too old, no need to dry; if too tender, dry on bamboo leaves. Coat with gold foil. The pills are the size of mung beans. Dissolve a small amount in well water, mix with rice drink, dip a soft duck feather, and apply to the eyes.
Preparation of auxiliary material: Use one vat and one large brick. Place 2-3 jin of Piao Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) on the brick. Every day, have a young boy pour urine onto it. After several months, take it out and place it in a quiet room. When it can be converted and swept as nitre, it is ready.
Treats wind-heat causing epidemic redness and swelling of the eyes, tearing upon exposure to wind, photophobia, and aversion to bright light.
Formula: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 6 qian), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 2 qian).
Decoct in water to obtain half a bowl of concentrated juice. Filter cleanly through raw silk. Add half a small cup of white honey, simmer over a double boiler until it becomes a paste. Store in ceramic vessels. Apply an amount the size of a hairpin tip to the eyes; the effect is miraculous.
Formula: Luganshi (Calamina, 2 liang, quenched in Sanhuang Tang), Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha), Yueshi (Borax, each 1 liang), Zhusha (Cinnabaris, 5 fen).
Grind all ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Form pills using refined old honey for dissolution and application to the eyes.
