More severe than Ke Wu (a disease in infants caused by exposure to strange odors or fright). Such as old coffins, rotting corpses, ancient trees of illicit shrines, desolate temples, dry wells, dilapidated houses, and dark ditches; all possess evil toxic qi. When children are exposed to these, the pathogenic factor enters the lungs through the nose, obstructing the clear pathways and causing blockage in the chest. They suddenly fall down, with cold limbs, clenched fists, and rapid upper-body panting; this is the condition described.
There are also cases of poisoning by toxic substances, such as mushrooms, pufferfish, cattle dead from plague, horses dead from epidemic diseases, and other livestock that died naturally, as well as water frogs, shrimp, clams, and similar items. Entering through the mouth, these affect the intestines and stomach, resulting in stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, and bluish-black discoloration of the abdominal skin. For both the former symptom (poisoning by evil qi) and the latter symptom (poisoning by toxic substances), it is appropriate to use Chu Bi San (Sneeze-Nose Powder) insufflated into the nose to induce sneezing, thereby dispersing the toxic vapors. However, Fan Hun Tang (Revive-Soul Decoction) is used to treat death caused by the former condition of inhaling evil qi.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (remove joints, 2 qian), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (remove skin, 7 seeds), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao, 炙甘草) (1 qian), Scallion White (Congbai, 葱白) (3 cun), Water (1 zhong). Decoct until half a zhong remains, and divide into several doses for administration.
Jiedu Xionghuang Wan (Detoxifying Realgar Pill) is used to treat death caused by the latter condition of ingesting toxic substances.
Realgar (Mingxionghuang, 明雄黄), Crotonis Fructus Frost (Badoushuang, 巴豆霜) (each 1 qian), Curcumae Radix (Chuan Yujin, 川郁金) (2 qian). Grind into fine powder, mix with vinegar and rice juice to form a paste, make into pills the size of mung beans. Take 3-5 pills each time, administered with plain warm water, stopping when bowel movement occurs.
If the specific disease is unknown, blow Chu Bi San (Sneeze-Nose Powder) into the nose. If no medicine is available, take one pill of dog feces, extract its juice, and administer orally.
Pediatric practitioners often classify this as Ji Jing Feng (Acute Convulsion). In reality, because a child's Qi and Blood are not yet fully developed, upon experiencing sudden great fright, the Shen Qi (Spiritual Energy) scatters and becomes chaotically disordered. Where could there be any excess pathogenic factors? It is barely sufficient to restore the healthy Qi; how can one use clearing and dispersing methods intended for Acute Convulsion? Substances like Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) and Amber (Hupo, 琥珀) merely serve to anchor and settle, which is not a method to save the root. Acute Convulsion arises from Wind-Heat, while Chronic Convulsion arises from Spleen and Kidney deficiency. This condition, however, is caused by confinement due to great fright, rooted in injury to the Heart and Gallbladder and the sudden departure of Shen Qi. The treatment should focus primarily on recovering the Shen Qi. It is suitable to use Mizhi Anshen Wan (Secret Instruction Calming Spirit Pill), Tuanshen San (Round Ginseng Powder), or Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction), added with gold or silver foil, decocted and administered.
Mizhi Anshen Wan (Secret Instruction Calming Spirit Pill) originally treats palpitations during sleep due to Heart Blood deficiency, and also treats sudden great fright. It further treats night crying after serious illness.
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参), Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Zaoren, 枣仁) (stir-fried), Poria (Fushen, 茯神), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Faxiaosu, 法半夏) (each 1 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) (large), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 白芍), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhong, 橘红) (each 0.7 fen), Schisandrae Fructus (Bei Wuwei, 北五味子) (7 grains, crushed flat), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao, 炙甘草) (0.5 fen).
Grind all into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of Euryale Seed (Qianshi, 芡实). Take one pill per dose, administered with Ginger Decoction.
Tuanshen San (Round Ginseng Powder) treats conditions such as Heart deficiency with Blood Heat, spontaneous sweating, and night sweating, and also treats sudden great fright.
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) (equal parts).
Grind all into fine powder. Use one male pig heart, sliced into three pieces. For each dose, take 2 qian of the powder and one slice of pig heart, decoct in water, and drink the soup. Add three Longan Arillus (Guiyuan, 桂圆)
