Limb extremities are cold, phlegm obstructs the throat, breathing sounds like sawing, lips are flaccid and complexion is cyanotic, breath at mouth and nose is faint, drowsy sleep with eyes partially open. Immediately use seven grains of Piperis Fructus (Hu Jiao), seven raw Gardeniae Fructus (Sheng Zhi Zi), seven segments of Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Cong Bai), a pinch of ash flour, and half of a chicken egg white. First, grind the former four ingredients into powder, mix evenly with the chicken egg white, spread on green cloth, apply to the child's heart pit (Xin Wo), remove after one day and night; if a cyan mark appears, it indicates recovery. If not recovered, apply again. After applying this formula, spleen-tonifying treatment should still be administered. For mild cases, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) decocted with fresh ginger and jujube; for severe cases, use Lizhong Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia and Poria Decoction for Middle Jiao Regulation), see previous page.
Pediatric Ke Wu (startle syndrome due to external pathogenic factors) arises from deficiency of primordial Yuan Qi and insufficiency of Shen Qi (spiritual energy), allowing external pathogens and 'guest' qi to take advantage. This may occur when strangers arrive from afar, livestock suddenly appear, or five climatic qi enter through the nose and lodge in the Heart and Lung, causing the righteous Qi to be disturbed. This is external-factor-induced Ke Wu. Symptoms include spitting out blue, yellow, or white froth, changes in facial complexion, rapid breathing, abdominal pain, restlessness with turning over, and spasms of hands and feet. The distinguishing feature of this condition is that consciousness remains clear, unlike other convulsive disorders. Treatment should employ Fontanelle Application Method (Tu Xin Fa), Nasal Insufflation Method (Chu Bi Fa), and internal administration of Shesheng San.
Fontanelle Application Method: Specifically treats Ke Wu and similar conditions.
Zao Xin Tu (Caulis Cistanches / Hearth Earth, 1 qian), Ming Xiong Huang (Realgar, 5 li), Zhen She Xiang (Musk, 5 li).
Grind together into fine powder, mix uniformly with date flesh, shape into cakes. According to the width of the fontanelle, apply the cake to the fontanelle. Take mugwort moxa wool, form a piece the size of a bean, moxibustion for three moxa cones then stop. Another prescription: Zao Xin Huang Tu (Hearth Earth) and Qiu Yin Fen (Earthworm Excrement), equal parts, grind into fine powder, mix with water and apply to the child's fontanelle and five centers (palms and soles); effective.
Nasal Insufflation Powder: Treats wind-cold and cold damage, unclear head and eyes, and also treats Ke Wu.
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Huo Xiang Ye (Agastache Leaf), Ya Zao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit Spine, 2 qian each), Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Xi Xin (Asarum Root), Chen Sha (Cinnabar, 4 fen each).
Grind into extremely fine powder, blow a small amount into the nose; sneezing expels the pathogenic qi.
Shesheng San: Treats all sudden attacks of evil, applicable to both internal medicine and pediatrics.
Zhi Nan Xing (Prepared Arisaema Rhizome), Nan Mu Xiang (Aucklandia Root), Fa Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia Tuber, 1 qian each), Bei Xi Xin (Asarum Root), Piao Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Rhizome), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 1 qian each), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 slices).
