Cold-type vomiting is characterized by undigested milk curds, frequent vomiting with little output, a pale face, dull eyes, absence of fever and thirst, slow breathing, lethargy, sweating on the forehead, and a deep, faint pulse (Chen Wei). For mild cases, Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agastache Powder to Rectify the Qi) is used. If vomiting persists, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) with added Huoxiang (Patchouli) is prescribed. If it still does not stop, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) with added bile from a male pig and a small amount of Tongbian (Child's Urine) will stop it spontaneously. A single-herb remedy: Take a large piece of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), slice it thinly lengthwise without cutting through, layer it with salt, tie it tightly with Ramie fiber, wrap it in seven layers of straw paper, moisten with water, and slow-roast until cooked. Remove the fiber and paper, mash the ginger, and decoct it with Zao Mi (Early Rice) to drink; this stops vomiting immediately and is very effective.
Pediatric vomiting due to Stomach Heat presents externally with a red face, irritability, body heat, thirst, and heat in the palms and soles: Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) 1 qian, stir-fried with Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice), and Shu Shigao (Calcined Gypsum) 1 qian, are ground into fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with warm water. Stop taking it once vomiting ceases. Another prescription: Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), coated with honey and roasted, brushed clean of hairs. Use ten leaves per dose, decoct in water, and take hot to stop vomiting immediately. Another prescription: Huashi (Talcum Powder, prepared by water flotation) 6 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root) 1 qian, ground into fine powder. Take 1–2 qian per dose, mixed with Danjiang Tang (Light Ginger Decoction).
Vomiting due to Food Injury presents with swollen eyelids, slightly yellow complexion, cold feet, heat that is milder during the day and heavier at night, or vomiting of sour fluid, yellow fluid, or green phlegm; this indicates retained food. Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Faxiabanxia (Prepared Pinellia Tuber), and Huoxiang (Patchouli) each 1.5 qian; Gongdingxiang (Clove), Zhike (Aurantium Fruit), Muxiang (Costus Root), and Houpo (Magnolia Bark, stir-fried with Ginger Juice) each 1 qian, are ground into fine powder. Chao Shenqu (Fried Medicated Leaven) 4 qian is ground fine and made into a paste to form pills the size of a longan fruit. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in a decoction of Jiang (Ginger) and Zao (Jujube). If injured by meat, add Zharu (Hawthorn Flesh) 0.8 fen and decoct together. If injured by wheat products, add Chao Maiya (Fried Hordeum Sprout) 0.8 fen and decoct together.
For pediatric patients who cannot tolerate medication due to vomiting, it is caused by Ascaris (Roundworms) in the diaphragm area. Adding Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper) 14 grains to the anti-emetic formula will prevent vomiting.
Severe dry retching in children: Extract juice from Ganshe (Sugarcane) and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) for use. Before administration, mix 6 spoons of Sugarcane juice with 1 spoon of Ginger juice evenly, warm slightly over boiling water, and take orally without mixing with other liquids.
Milk-injury vomiting, where milk is vomited immediately after feeding, is called "Overflowing Milk." Regulate the breastfeeding frequency, and vomiting will stop naturally. Alternatively, wait for the milk to digest, then decoct two slices of Wei Jiang (Roasted Ginger) and two Hongzao (Jujubes) in water and drink a few spoons; this is also beneficial.
Milk vomiting, characterized by frequent but scant vomiting, appearing as if vomiting but not quite, is due to Stomach Deficiency. Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with added Huoxiang (Patchouli) and Sharen (Amomum Fruit) each 0.6 fen, three slices of Wei Jiang (Roasted Ginger), and two Hongzao (Jujubes) are decocted to yield one cup of liquid, taken slowly. Alternatively, decocting only Wei Jiang (Roasted Ginger) and Hongzao (Jujubes) in water is also effective.
