The black part of the eye (cornea/pupil area) belongs to the Liver, the white part (sclera/conjunctiva) belongs to the Lung, the pupil belongs to the Kidney, the upper and lower eyelids belong to the Spleen, and the inner and outer canthi belong to the San Jiao (Triple Burner). The Heart is the wheel of movement and mechanism for the eyes. Therefore, if the interior of the eye is red, it is caused by accumulated heat in the Heart attacking upwards; Dao Chi San (see Mouth section) is used as the primary treatment. If the eye appears greenish, it indicates Liver Heat; Xie Qing Wan is used. If yellow, it indicates Spleen Heat; Xie Huang San (see Tongue section) is used. If there is blurred vision without swelling, pain, or redness, no pterygium/membrane, or with floating black spots and lack of luster in the gaze, this is Yin deficiency of the Liver and Kidney. Cold-natured medicines should not be administered; Zi Yin Shen Qi Wan is indicated. For newborns whose eyes are closed at birth, this is caused by the nursing mother consuming hot or toxic foods. A small amount of Bear Gallbladder (Xiong Dan) should be used to wash the eyes with steamed water, seven times a day. If they do not open after three days, Di Huang Tang is administered to the infant, and Mu Tong San (see Fetal Heat section) to the nursing mother. If the nursing mother consumes hot/toxic foods causing the infant's eyes to become red, Xiao Feng San with modifications is used for regulation. For epidemic wind-heat causing blurry, red, and swollen eyes, Kai Ming Tang and Chong He Tang are indicated. For strabismus (Dou Jing), Niu Huang Gao is used. For phthisis oculi (Gan Yan) with pus and discharge, Long Dan Yin Zi is used. For chickenpox toxins or innocent phthisis entering the eyes, Yang Gan San is used. If cleaning upon birth is incomplete, filth soaks into the eyes causing redness and ulceration of the canthi that does not heal; or due to difficult labor, delayed fetal rotation, pressure on the fetal head, and blood injection into the eyes, resulting in an inability to see the pupil at birth, with red and swollen external eyelids and ulcerated margins, Sheng Di Tang should be taken, and Si Shen San used for washing. Heavy cold-natured medicines must be avoided to prevent damage to the Zang-Fu organs. If Liver Qi rushes upward, causing severe descent of brain fluid and curtain-like pterygium, Bu Nao Huan Jing Wan is indispensable.
Various untreatable conditions: The sclera resembles roasted brain marrow; the pterygium resembles plum blossom stamens; the pupil is scattered; glaucoma leading to blindness; pus discharging from the sclera; internal pterygium enveloping the pupil; distended blood vessels; ruptured pupil; white opacity penetrating the center of the pupil; protrusion of the black globe.
