(This is due to insufficient body fluids, causing blood stagnation within the meridians; abundant blood generates heat. There are also cases where wind and summerheat scorch internally, presenting with symptoms such as fainting and convulsions.)
Heat consumption (Re Lao) arises from heat accumulation in the Heart and Lung, damaging Qi and Blood, leading to mental restlessness, flushed cheeks, headache, dry eyes, dry lips, sores in the mouth and tongue, mental fatigue, robust heat in the four limbs, loss of appetite, limb soreness and pain, palpitations, night sweats, skin pain, or alternating chills and fever. One should investigate the etiology, regulate and tonify Qi and Blood, and the symptoms will naturally subside.
Xue Lizhai stated: The aforementioned conditions are caused by "vigorous fire" consuming Qi and boiling down True Yin. Wang Taipu stated: If there is extreme cold that does not warm up despite hot treatment, it indicates a lack of Fire (Kidney Yang deficiency), and one should treat the Heart; if there is extreme heat that does not cool down despite cold treatment, it indicates a lack of Water (Kidney Yin deficiency), and one should assist the Kidney. Excess in the Heart generates heat, while excess in the Kidney generates cold. However, deficiency in the Heart causes heat to be retained internally, and deficiency in the Kidney causes vacuous cold to move within. I believe that for the aforementioned conditions: if Liver and Spleen Blood are deficient, use Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), Renshen (Ginseng), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome); if Liver and Spleen have constrained heat, use Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) combined with Siwu Tang; if Spleen and Stomach Qi are deficient, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction); if Liver Meridian Blood is deficient, use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder); if Liver Meridian has wind-heat, use Xiaochaihu Tang; if Heart Meridian Blood is deficient, use Jiawei Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substance Decoction). Heat occurring before noon belongs to the Qi level, treated with Qingxin Lianzi Yin (Clear the Heart and Lotus Seed Decoction); heat occurring after noon belongs to the Blood level, treated with Siwu Tang, Renshen, Baizhu, and Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex). Heat arising from the left side indicates Liver Fire; in excess patterns, use Siwu Tang, Longdancao (Gentiana Root), Shanzhi (Gardenia Fruit); in deficiency patterns, use Siwu Tang, Renshen, Baizhu, and Huangqi (Astragalus Root). Heat arising from below the navel indicates Yin Fire, treated with Siwu Tang, Renshen, Baizhu, Jiu Ban Chao Hei Huangbai (Rhizoma Coptidis processed with wine and charred), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark); if ineffective, urgently use Jiawei Bawei Wan (Modified Eight-Ingredient Pill). Occasional facial flushing, or heat without fixed location, or rising from the soles of the feet, indicates rootless vacuous fire, treated with Jiawei Bawei Wan and Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) plus Maidong and Wuweizi. Most of the above are derived from Xue Lizhai's *Furen Liangfang* (Good Prescriptions for Women), but although the five Zang organs are the same in men and women, with minor differences, the nature of consumption remains the same.
