(Jingyue) This is a formula for treating the deficiency of Kidney Water and the excess of Fire, hence named "Yi Yin Jian" (One Yin Decoction). It is indicated for conditions where the True Yin of the Kidney is damaged, presenting with pulse and symptoms predominantly Yang in nature, such as deficiency-fire fever, and bleeding due to Yin deficiency. It is also suitable for cases following malaria or cold damage where repeated sweating therapies have led to excessive perspiration, resulting in a deficient pulse and weak Qi, yet persistent thirst and irritability, and unremitting tidal fever. These conditions arise from Yin injury due to excessive sweating and the subsequent deficiency of Water; all such cases should be treated with this formula, modified according to the specific presentation.
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (3-5 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (2 qian), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex) (1.5 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (1 qian). If Fire is flourishing causing restlessness, add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1-2 qian each to astringe.
(Jingyue) This is a formula for treating Heat in the Heart Meridian and the failure of Water to control Fire, hence named "Er Yin Jian" (Two Yins Decoction). It is indicated for conditions such as fright, mania, loss of willpower, excessive talking and laughing, or sores and rashes, irritability, heat, and hemorrhage. This formula is the primary treatment for these syndromes.
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (3-4 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (2-3 qian), Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) (2 qian), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis) (1.5 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (1-2 qian). Alternatively, add Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) 1.5 qian.
This is a formula for treating Liver and Spleen deficiency and damage, insufficiency of Essence and Blood, and hemorrhage due to Ying (Nutritive) Blood deficiency, hence named "San Yin Jian" (Three Yins Decoction). It is indicated for conditions such as wind-stroke where Blood fails to nourish the sinews, or after the pathogenic factor of malaria has dispersed but chills and fever persist. These are all diseases of deficiency of Yin and Blood involving the Shaoyang and Jueyin meridians. If there is slight Fire, Yi Yin Jian is appropriate; if there is no Fire, this formula is the primary treatment.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2-3 qian), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (3-5 qian), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix) (stir-fried with wine), Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) (2 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (as appropriate), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (1 qian). If there is vomiting and nausea, add Wei Jiang (Baked Ginger) 3-5 slices. If there is excessive sweating with irritability, add Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) 14 grains. If there is excessive sweating with Qi deficiency, add Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) 1-2 qian. If there is dull pain in the lower abdomen, add Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus) 1-2 qian. If there is distension and stuffiness, add Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 1-2 qian. If there is weakness in the waist, knees, bones, and sinews, add Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex) and Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix).
This is a formula for preserving the Lung and clearing Metal, hence named "Si Yin Jian" (Four Yins Decoction). It treats Yin deficiency with consumptive disease, flourishing Ministerial Fire, exhaustion of body fluids, irritability and thirst, cough, hematemesis, and epistaxis, along with excessive heat.
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (3-4 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Bai He (Lilii Bulbus) (2 qian), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root) (1 qian), Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix) (2 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (1.5 qian). For night sweats, Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) may also be used. If Metal and Water fail to mutually nourish leading to dryness, add Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) 3-5 qian. If there is excessive sweating and insomnia with unsettled Soul and Spirit, add Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) 2 qian. If there is excessive sweating accompanied by thirst, it can be used. If there is blood deficiency with delayed menstruation and dryness without flow, add Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) 2 qian. If there is blood heat causing hematemesis or epistaxis, add Qian Gen (Rubiae Radix) 2 qian. If there is excessive Fire with dry stool, or dry cough with expectoration of blood, add Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix) 2 qian, or add Tong Bian (Child's Urine) as an alternative. If Fire carries Blood upward, remove Gan Cao (Licorice Root) and add Chao Shan Zhi (Stir-fried Gardeniae Fructus) 1-2 qian.
