Treats diseases caused by summerheat-dampness, presenting with fever, headache, irritability, and thirst.
The formula is found in Volume VII, Lower Section, under the category "Drying Dampness".
Treats injury from summerheat, presenting with thirst and a deficient pulse.
Treats Taiyang Zhongyue (heatstroke), presenting with body heat, sweating, cold feet, aversion to cold, a faint pulse, and thirst.
Both of the above formulas are found in Volume VIII, Lower Section, under the category "Draining Fire".
(From *Qianjin Fang*) Treats heat damaging Yuan Qi (Original Qi), presenting with shortness of breath, fatigue, thirst, and profuse sweating, along with cough due to Lung deficiency. (The Lung governs Qi; fire-heat damages the Lung, hence shortness of breath. Metal is controlled by fire and cannot generate Water, hence thirst. Qi deficiency leads to fatigue. The Lung governs the skin and hair; deficiency leads to sweating. Deficient fire attacks the Lung, hence cough.)
Li Dongyuan stated: Body fluids are governed by the Large Intestine (Geng Metal). During the dog days (Sanfu), Geng Metal is imprisoned. If body fluids are lost through profuse sweating, damp-heat becomes hyperactive. Dry Metal is imprisoned, and Wind Wood lacks control. Thus, wind and dampness contend, causing vexing pain in the bone joints and pain throughout the body. Whenever damp-heat prevails, Metal is controlled by fire, cutting off the source of Cold Water's generation, leading to flaccidity of the limbs, foot deformity, and blurred vision. This formula is most suitable for such conditions.)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (5 fen), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (7 grains).
The Lung governs Qi; when Lung Qi is vigorous, the Qi of the other four Zang organs is also vigorous. Deficiency leads to a faint pulse and shortness of breath. Renshen is sweet and warm, greatly tonifying Lung Qi and clearing heat, serving as the Sovereign herb.
