[Ren Shen Xie Fei Tang (Ginseng Decoction to Drain the Lung)] Treats accumulated heat in the Lung Meridian, manifesting as upper asthma, cough, chest and diaphragm fullness, excessive phlegm, and constipation.
Ingredients: Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Semen), Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, peeled and tip removed), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix).
Note regarding Ren Shen: Lung heat can damage Lung Qi. This formula is named "Ren Shen Xie Fei" because it clears accumulated heat from the Lung Meridian. It demonstrates that draining Lung heat must not injure Lung Qi.
[Xie Bai San (Drain the White Powder)] (From Qian Yi) Treats Lung Fire, manifesting as steaming heat in the skin. (The Lung governs the skin and hair; a pulse felt lightly but disappearing with heavy pressure indicates heat in the skin and hair.) Chills and fever alternating. (Pathogenic factors are in the skin and interstices.) Symptoms worsen at dusk (Shen and You hours, 3 PM–7 PM, when Metal energy is strongest). Asthma, cough, and rapid breathing. (The Lung suffers from rebellious Qi.)
Ingredients: Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex) (each 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian), Jing Mi (Oryzae Fructus Glutinosa) (100 grains).
Analysis: Sang Bai Pi is sweet, pungent, and cold; it promotes water metabolism, descends fire, and drains excess Qi from the Lung. It eliminates phlegm, stops cough, benefits urination and defecation, and treats thirst due to heat. Di Gu Pi is cold and drains heat from the fire level.
If Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Fu Ling (Poria), Qing Pi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), and Chen Pi (Aurantii Pericarpium) are added, it is named Jia Jian Xie Bai San (Modified Drain the White Powder). (From Li Dongyuan) Treats cough and asthma with rapid breathing. If vomiting occurs, add Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Qing Pi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), and Chen Pi (Aurantii Pericarpium); if accompanied by chills and fever, add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) as assistants. If there is throat obstruction... (Text fragmentary).
[Ji Su San Type Formula] Treats severe heat in the Spleen and Lung, causing empty vexation and upward congestion, and sores in the throat.
Ingredients: Ji Su Ye (Elsholtziae Spica/Perilla Leaf variant), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, at any time, mixed with boiling water.
Note: This formula clears heat from the Upper Jiao using purely acrid-cool and light-clearing properties, without mixing bitter-cold descending agents. Its insight is profound, surpassing formulas like Liang Ge San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder).
[Hua Gan Jian (Decoction to Transform the Liver)] Treats conditions caused by anger injuring the Liver, leading to Qi rebellion stirring fire, resulting in vexation, heat, hypochondriac pain, and bleeding disorders.
Ingredients: Qing Pi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Chen Pi (Aurantii Pericarpium), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (2 qian), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (if bleeding is in the lower part, replace with Gan Cao), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) (1.5 qian).
Note: If accompanied by chills and fever, add more... (Text fragmentary); if [condition] is severe, do not use Bai Shao.
