[Baoyin Decoction] Treats leukorrhea and turbid discharge in men and women, spermatorrhea and stranguria with red urine containing blood, slippery pulse indicating internal heat, and persistent hematochezia. It also treats metrorrhagia, bloody stranguria, or menstruation occurring too early, covering all syndromes where Yin deficiency with internal heat causes bleeding.
Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Shudi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Chuanxuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) [each 2 qian], Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) [1 qian]. If there is frequent urination with heat sensation and sweating, add Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix) 1-2 qian; if there is Qi sinking, add Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma).
[Zishen Wan] (Li Dongyuan also calls it Tongguan Wan.) Treats pathogenic heat in the Lower Jiao, thirstlessness, but urinary retention. It also treats steaming fever due to Kidney deficiency, weakness of the legs and knees, impotence, sweating of the genital area, and asthma caused by the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) Qi rushing upward. (The Kidney contains both Water and Fire; when Water is insufficient, Fire acts alone, thus generating deficient heat. Liver and Kidney deficiency allows excessive heat to stagnate in the Lower Jiao, causing weakness of the legs and knees, impotence, and genital sweating. The Chong Mai originates between the two yins and rushes straight up to the chest; when Water cannot control Fire, Qi rebels upward causing asthma.)
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex prepared with wine) [2 liang], Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma prepared with wine) [1 liang], Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) [1 qian], made into honey pills.
Urination is governed by the Foot-Taiyang Bladder channel and its source lies in Lung Metal. Hidden heat in the Lung prevents the generation of fluids, thereby cutting off the source of urine. Thirst with urinary difficulty requires herbs that purge fire, clear the Lung, and nourish the source of Water transformation. If heat is in the Lower Jiao without thirst, this indicates a blockage of flow preventing urination; one must use heavy-tasting, Yin-within-Yang agents (bitter-cold descending herbs) to separate Qi and transform dampness. Removing Rougui yields Liaoshen Ziben Wan for treating blurred vision due to Kidney deficiency. Removing Rougui and adding Huanglian yields Huangbai Zishen Wan for treating upper heat and lower cold (Extreme Yang resembling Yin). Take with wine.
[Shengyang Sanhuo Tang] (Li Dongyuan) Treats heat in the muscles and surface, heat in the four limbs, heat in the bone marrow, feeling as if burning like fire, hot to the touch. This disease often arises from damage to Qi and Blood due to diet and overwork, or from Spleen-Stomach deficiency combined with excessive consumption of cold foods, which suppresses and obstructs Yang Qi within the Spleen Earth. This formula is suitable for such conditions.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) [8 qian], Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) [2.5 qian], Gegen (Puerariae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) [each 5 qian], Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) [3 qian].
Chaihu disperses the fire of the Shaoyang channel, serving as the Sovereign herb. Shengma and Gegen disperse the fire of the Yangming channel; Qianghuo disperses the fire of the Taiyang channel; Duhuo disperses the fire of the Shaoyin channel, serving as the Minister herbs.
He Gao stated: The Classic says, "Minor Fire generates Qi." Heaven and Earth cannot generate things without this fire, and humans cannot sustain life without it. When raised, it shines; when suppressed, it vanishes. Now, due to dietary suppression, the path of generation is nearly extinguished. If Clear Yang emerges from the upper orifices, then Turbid Yin naturally returns to the lower orifices. Thus, the digestion and transformation of food will suffer no obstruction. Li Dongyuan was masterful in treating the Spleen and Stomach; his treatment must prioritize raising Yang. Common physicians only know how to descend Qi but not how to raise it; this is extinguishing the Minor Fire, how can they hope to preserve health? He further said: Ancients used acrid-dispersing herbs often assisted by sour-astringent herbs. Therefore, Guizhi Tang also uses Shaoyao, acting as a military-style restraint.)
Removing Renshen and Duhuo, and adding Congbai (Allii Fistulosum Bulbus), yields Huoyu Tang, treating the same condition. (Huoyu syndrome presents with internal heat and external cold, a deep and rapid pulse; the fire is constrained without flame, hence presenting as external cold.)
Tao Jie'an cites Shengyang Sanhuo Tang: Renshen, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fushen (Poria cum Radix et Lignum), Gancao, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao, Chaihu, Huangqin. Add Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Zao (Jujubae Fructus), decocted in a gold vessel. Treats injury... (text incomplete) This is... excess... small...
