Treats phlegm-saliva congestion in individuals with weak constitutions.
Grind Ren Shen Lu (Ginseng Rhizome Stalk) into powder, mix with water to take one or two qian, or add Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) and take together. (For slippery phlegm). After taking the medicine, gently induce vomiting by stimulating the throat with an object. (If not induced,
since the patient is weak and emaciated, Ren Shen Lu is used instead of Li Lu (Veratrum Root) and Gua Di (Melon Seed). Its action is dispersing yet mildly tonifying, preventing damage to Yuan Qi (Original Qi). (Zhu Danxi said: Ren Shen tonifies the Yin within Yang
(Zhang Zhongjing) Treats deficiency-heat vexation and insomnia after sweating, vomiting, or purging in Shang Han (Cold Damage), severe cases tossing and turning, with a feeling of stifling heat and restlessness in the chest. Also treats persistent body heat and epigastric binding pain after severe purging, or phlegm lodged in the diaphragm. (After sweating, vomiting, or purging, Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) is insufficient, pathogenic factors enter due to deficiency and bind in the chest, causing vexation and heat with restlessness.
Vexation and heat refer to fever accompanied by irritability. Restlessness refers to a feeling of stifling discomfort in the heart. Daytime activity belongs to Yang, nighttime lying down belongs to Yin. Since Yang-heat has not dissipated and Yin-Qi has not recovered,
sleep is impossible. If body heat subsides but epigastric binding pain remains, it indicates heat has fully entered the interior, forming Jie Xiong (Chest Binding). If heat persists with binding pain, this is Xu Fan (Deficiency Vexation) caused by scattered guest-heat,
with heat still at the exterior, thus it should be resolved by inducing vomiting.)
Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit) (14 pods) Dan Chi (Light Fermented Soybean) (4 he) Take until slight vomiting occurs.
Vexation is due to excess heat. Zhi Zi is bitter and cold, red in color entering the Heart, thus serving as the Sovereign herb. Dan Chi is bitter and can drain heat; its fermented nature can overcome dryness/restlessness. (Kidney Qi possesses the function of fermentation/rotting,

Because the Nei Jing states "if other diseases arise after purging/diarrhea, treat the root first; must regulate the root before treating other diseases," this serves as a warning. It also says: The various methods using Zhi Zi and Dan Chi,
although symptoms show differences between Shi Fan (Excess Vexation) and Xu Fan (Deficiency Vexation), all can be used to vomit out residual heat. This is because after sweating, vomiting, or purging, Yang Qi in the chest is insufficient. The most deficient area
is where pathogens tend to reside; it is appropriate to follow the high position and resolve it by vomiting. If one claims that internal fluids are exhausted and Zheng Qi suddenly deficient with residual pathogens remaining, then Zhang Zhongjing originally had
the method of Zhi Gan Cao Tang (Licorice Decoction), how could one dare recklessly use vomiting to violate the prohibition against making deficiency worse!)
Add Gan Cao (Licorice Root), named Zhi Zi Gan Cao Chi Tang (Gardenia, Licorice, and Fermented Soybean Decoction), (Zhang Zhongjing) treats the aforementioned conditions with shortness of breath. (Liu Hongbi said: For shortness of breath, add Gan Cao to harmonize the Middle Jiao,
