(Jingyue) "Four" corresponds to the Metal number in the Five Elements and belongs to the Qi level. In cases where Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is insufficient, or after enduring hunger and fatigue followed by contraction of Wind-Cold, or when the six pulses are tight, minute, or fine indicating that Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) cannot overcome the pathogen, it is essential to tonify and assist Yuan Qi while simultaneously dispersing the exterior pathogens. Only then can life be preserved; this formula is suitable for such conditions. If one only knows how to disperse pathogens without addressing the root cause, Yuan Qi will inevitably fail first. One must examine and be cautious.
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) [1-3 qian], Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) [as appropriate], Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root) [1 qian], Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) [2-3 qian, use less if diarrhea is present], Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) [3-7 slices].
(Jingyue) "Five" corresponds to the Earth number and relates to the Spleen and Stomach. Spleen Earth is the foundation of the five zang organs. In cases where Zhong Qi (Middle Jiao Qi) is insufficient and exterior pathogens cannot be dispersed, this formula must not be omitted. This formula has a interior-exterior relationship with Si Chai Hu Yin (Four Bupleurin Decoction), but while Si Chai Hu Yin only regulates the Qi level, this formula also tonifies Blood and Qi to expel exterior pathogens, making it particularly relevant to seasonal changes. Its miraculous effects cannot be fully described. It is suitable for Shang Han (Cold Damage), Malaria, and smallpox/variolae.
Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, stir-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) [2-3 qian], Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) [1-3 qian], Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) [3-5 qian], Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root) [1 qian], Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) [as needed].
Add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) [2 qian] if necessary.
(Jingyue) Treats Ying Deficiency (Deficiency of Nutritive Qi/Blood) preventing the production of sweat. For cases of True Yin insufficiency where exterior Cold pathogens are difficult to resolve, this is a miraculous formula.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) [1 liang], Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) [5 qian], Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root) [8 fen].
Alternatively, add Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) [3-7 slices], or Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) [1 qian], or Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma).
(Qianjin Fang) Treats vomiting and hiccups with inability to eat following Shang Han (Cold Damage).
Lugen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) [1 sheng], Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniae Succus), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) [2 liang], Jingmi (Oryza Sativa Germ).
Lugen is sweet and cold, subduing Fire and promoting urination. Zhuru is sweet and cold, clearing Stomach Heat and moistening Dryness (Metal). Sheng Jiang is acrid and warm, dispelling Cold-Fluid and dispersing rebellious Qi.
(Also known as Sheng Shu Shui / Raw and Boiled Water) Treats Huoluan (Colic with Vomiting and Diarrhea) and infantile vomiting/diarrhea with miraculous efficacy. (There are many medicines for treating Huoluan, but they are divided into Cold and Hot syndromes. Misuse can lead to immediate death. In sudden onset, before the pulse condition is fully assessed, do not lightly administer formulas that are excessively hot or cold. Drinking Yin-Yang Water is the safest approach. Zhang Zihe stated: Huoluan with vomiting and diarrhea results from the combination of Wind, Dampness, and Summerheat pathogens. Damp Earth is controlled by Wind Wood; stagnation generates Heat. Heart Fire flares upward, causing vomiting (vomiting represents Fire). Spleen Dampness flows downward, causing diarrhea (diarrhea represents Dampness). Severe Wind causes muscle twitching/cramps (twitching represents Wind). Furthermore, pathogens in the Upper Jiao cause vomiting, those in the Lower Jiao cause diarrhea, and those in the Middle Jiao cause alternating vomiting and diarrhea.)
Baifei Tang (Boiling Water) and Xinji Jingshui (Fresh Well Water) are mixed in equal parts and taken orally.
When Yin and Yang energies are indistinct and chaotic, upper vomiting and lower diarrhea occur, constituting Huoluan. Drinking this formula brings relief because it differentiates and harmonizes Yin and Yang, restoring balance.
