[Shengshu Decoction] Treats cases where food injury occurs occasionally, manifesting as vomiting or diarrhea, chest and diaphragm stuffiness and oppression, or hypochondriac pain. It is also indicated for cases where excessive use of purgative or attacking medicines has damaged the Qi of the Zang-Fu organs, resulting in weakness, timidity of Qi, and mental fatigue. In such instances, this formula should be used promptly. One must not fear using Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) merely because the presentation involves deficiency-type fullness or deficiency-type stuffiness; the key to distinguishing between excess and deficiency here lies in accurate differentiation. If pain and distension are particularly severe, administering Shenxiang San with this decoction is optimal. This formula is especially efficacious for treating diarrhea and vomiting caused by cold-dampness.
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu): Use winter-harvested Baizhu with a sweet taste, stir-fried for 5-7 qian or up to 1 liang. Dried Ginger (Ganjiang): Stir-fried. Red Cinnamon Twig (Chirougui): 1-2 qian. Tangerine Peel (Chenpi): Use according to circumstances, or... if there is cold pathogen, add Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang)...
[Xiaobanxia Fuling Tang] Summerheat disease is essentially a heat disease of the summer months. Its name has existed since ancient times, as recorded in the *Zuo Zhuan* ("people seeking shade under trees"). Zhang Zhongjing referred to it as "Zhong Yue" (Summerheat stroke). During periods of intense summer heat and scorching sun, or when... leading to Cold pathogen invading the muscle layer, symptoms such as fever and aversion to cold, headache, absence of sweating, bodily stiffness and tension, and limb soreness may occur. These should primarily be treated with warming and dispersing methods, following the treatment principles for Cold Damage (Shanghan). Additionally, if improper diet involving excessive consumption of raw and cold foods leads to Cold damaging the Zang-Fu organs, resulting in vomiting, diarrhea, dysentery, and abdominal pain, treatment should prioritize warming the Middle Jiao. Failure to distinguish between exterior and interior, or to observe Yin and Yang, can result in death more cruelly than by a blade. (Haizang's Note: Treats latent summerheat causing irritability and thirst, fever and headache, and dysfunction of the Spleen and Stomach.)
Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia): 1 jin, boiled dry with 5 jin of Vinegar. Poria (Fuling). Licorice Root (Gancao): 0.5 jin, used raw. Make pills using Ginger Juice paste; avoid contact with raw water; administer with hot water. If there is Phlegm, add...
In the late summer period, heat steams and evaporates, and Damp Earth rules, so Summerheat inevitably combines with Dampness. Presentations include constipation, irritability, and thirst, or vomiting and diarrhea, due to Dampness prevailing and failing to transform. This formula can open... Dampness... For those with many [symptoms], combine 1 liang of this formula with 2 qian of Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), named Huanglian Xiaoshu Wan. It treats latent summerheat causing irritability and thirst, accompanied by abundant Heat-Phlegm.
(Note from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treats sudden vomiting, epigastric stuffiness, fluid retention between the diaphragm, vertigo, and palpitations.
