(From *Yijian Fang*) Treats thirst-quenching disease (Xiao Ke) accompanied by irritability, dry throat, flushed face, and flaming fire of the Kidney ascending.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) [honey-fried], Gan Cao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma) [roasted], Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Pi Pa Ye (Loquat Leaf) [honey-fried], Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma).
This formula generates fluids, nourishes blood, moistens dryness, and quenches thirst. It is assisted by Ze Xie and Zhi Qiao to dredge the Bladder and Large Intestine.
(Ze Xie drains fire from the Bladder; Zhi Qiao expands qi in the Large Intestine.) By clearing and promoting urination in the lower jiao, Heart Fire descends naturally. (The Heart and Small Intestine are exterior-interior related.) Thus, thirst will cease spontaneously. (Yu Jiayan stated: Ren Shen Bai Hu Tang specifically treats燥热 (dry-heat) in the Qi level; this formula specifically treats dry-heat in the Blood level. Zhu Ye Huang Qi Tang treats dry-heat involving both Qi and Blood, and should be selected based on syndrome differentiation. Attached is the composition of Zhu Ye Huang Qi Tang: Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba) and Sheng Di Huang each 2 qian; Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Mai Dong, Chao Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) [stir-fried], Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Gan Cao, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Shi Gypsum each 1 qian. It treats thirst-quenching disease with deficiency of both Qi and Blood, complicated by Stomach Fire.)
(From *Qianjin Fang*) Moistens the Lung and disperses Cold. (Bai Mi [White Honey] is slippery and moistens the Lung; Sheng Jiang [Fresh Ginger Rhizome] is pungent and disperses Cold.)
Bai Mi (1 jin), Sheng Jiang (2 jin, juice extracted). First weigh the copper pot and record its weight. Add honey and ginger juice, simmer over low heat until the ginger juice is completely evaporated, leaving only 1 jin of honey.
Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) stops coughing. Chew and swallow occasionally.
(Mr. Shen's Formula) Treats dry cough. (Cough with sound but no sputum is called dry cough, caused by depletion of fluids in the Lung and Kidney. If dry cough is due to constrained Fire obstructing phlegm, lifting and dispersing herbs such as those in Xiao Yao San should be used first, followed by yin-nourishing agents to conclude treatment.)
Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (4 jin), Fu Ling (Poria) (12 liang), Ren Shen (6 liang), Bai Mi (2 jin). First decoct Di Huang to extract juice and remove dregs. Add honey and refine until thick. Then...
Di Huang nourishes Yin and generates Water. Water controls Fire. Bai Mi is sweet, cool, and moistening. Moisture removes dryness. Qi is the mother of Water. Earth is the mother of Metal. Therefore, Ren Shen and Fu Ling are used to tonify Earth (Spleen/Stomach).
(From *Ben Shi Fang*) Treats wind constipation in the elderly. (Xu Shuwei said: An eighty-four-year-old woman suddenly suffered abdominal pain, headache, nausea, and loss of appetite. The proposal was to tonify the Spleen, dispel Wind, and clear the head and eyes. Medication failed to cure her; she ate nothing, causing great worry among her family. I analyzed that previous medications were incorrect. This case involves Wind pathogen causing stagnation of Zang-Fu organs, accumulating in the chest, leading to abdominal distension, nausea, and anorexia. When pathogenic factors ascend to the vertex, headache occurs. I prescribed this porridge. As Qi descended and vented, bowel movements gradually became unobstructed. More than ten stools resembling dried peppercorns were passed, and she recovered without further medication.) Also treats postpartum constipation. (Postpartum women suffer from various ailments; Yu Mao [depression and vertigo] leads to excessive sweating, which causes constipation, making medication difficult.)
Da Ma Ren (Cannabis Fructus) and Zi Su Zi (Perillae Fructus) in equal parts. Wash clean, grind together, add water, grind again, extract juice, and cook into porridge.
Ma Ren (Cannabis Fructus) is the principal herb for the Yangming channel; its slipperiness moistens dryness, promotes bowel movement, and dispels Wind. Zi Su Zi also enters the Taiyin channel, moistens the Lung, unblocks the intestines, harmonizes Blood, and directs Qi downward. Its action is gentle and not harsh.
