(Ju Fang) Treats the condition where the eyes cannot see far but can see near. (Zhang Yuansu stated: The ability to see near is attributed to water [dampness/fluid retention] in the body; the inability to see far is attributed to a lack of fire [yang qi]. The treatment method should tonify the Heart.) Regular consumption benefits the Heart and strengthens the will, treating forgetfulness.
Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu) (2 liang each), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fuling) (1 liang each). Form into pills with honey, coated with Cinnabar Barbituri Rubrum (Zhusha). This is Zhang Ziheng's formula, which excludes Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, adding Polyporus (Fushen) and Biota Semen (Baoziren).
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma tonifies Heart Qi; Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma opens the Heart orifices; Poria allows Heart Qi to descend and communicate with the Kidney; Polygalae Radix allows Kidney Qi to ascend and communicate with the Heart. Cinnabar Barbituri Rubrum is red in color, clearing Liver heat and calming the Heart spirit.
(Li Dongyuan) Treats the condition where the eyes can see far but cannot see near. (Zhang Yuansu stated: The ability to see far is attributed to fire in the body; the inability to see near is attributed to a lack of water [yin fluids]. The treatment method should tonify the Kidney water.)
Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang), Asparagi Radix (Tian dong) (4 liang each), Aurantii Fructus (Zhike), Chrysanthemi Flos (Ganjuhua) (2 liang each). Form into pills with honey, taken with tea decoction or wine. (Tea is used to direct fire and heat downward.)
Rehmanniae Radix cools blood and generates blood; Asparagi Radix moistens the Lung and nourishes Kidney yin; Aurantii Fructus expands the intestines and removes stagnation; Chrysanthemi Flos descends fire and dispels wind.
Treats Kidney water exhaustion, Liver wind-heat, leading to blurred vision and excessive tearing. (The Kidney governs the pupil of the eye; when Kidney water is exhausted, vision blurs. When the Liver has wind-heat, tears flow.)
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudihuang), Raw Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang), Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (Chuanjiao) (remove the seeds and closed ones, lightly stir-fried). Form into pills with honey, size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, swallowing with salted water on an empty stomach.
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix tonifies the Kidney; Raw Rehmanniae Radix cools the Liver; Zanthoxyli Pericarpium is pungent and hot, treating bi-syndrome [obstruction] of Qi in the Liver and Kidney. (Refers to damp-heat Qi that adheres and does not disperse.)
Treats trichiasis and entropion (inverted eyelashes curling inward). (Trichiasis and entropion are caused by tension in the eye muscles and contraction of the skin. This is due to latent heat attacking internally and Yin Qi moving externally. One must eliminate the pathogenic fire so that the eyelid skin relaxes, allowing the eyelashes to stand upright.)
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (stir-fried), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (roasted), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (1 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (1.5 qian), Puerariae Radix (Gegen), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (5 fen), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi) (3 fen).
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma tonify Qi; Angelicae Sinensis Radix nourishes Blood; Coptidis Rhizoma clears fire; Saposhnikoviae Radix and Puerariae Radix disperse wind-heat; Asari Radix et Rhizoma enters the Shaoyin channel and moistens the Kidney; Viticis Fructus... Removing Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, and Coptidis Rhizoma, and adding Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), named Shenxiao Mingmu Tang. (Li Dongyuan) Treats the aforementioned symptoms, accompanied by redness, ulceration, blurriness, pain, cold tears, and excessive ocular discharge. (Discharge, pronounced "chi", refers to eye grease/rheum.) Another method is to pluck out the curled eyelashes and apply flea blood several times, resulting in cure.
