(Zhao Qian) Treats redness of the eyes with tearing, accompanied by pain or itching, blurred vision making reading impossible. Fear of light at night. (Blood heat causes redness of the eyes; Liver heat causes excessive tearing. Mild heat causes itching; severe heat causes pain. Redness, swelling, and dimness lead to inability to see clearly. Yang excess leads to fear of light at night.)
Sheep Gallbladder and Honey: Place honey into the sheep gallbladder, steam until cooked, wait for it to dry, then grind finely into a paste. Take a small amount orally each time, or instill into the eyes. Another method: In the twelfth lunar month, fill the sheep gallbladder with honey.
Sheep gallbladder is bitter and cold, benefiting the Gallbladder and clearing Heat; Honey is sweet and moistening, tonifying the Middle Jiao and softening the Liver. It is called "Two Hundred Herbs and Flowers Paste" because sheep eat hundreds of herbs, and bees gather from hundreds of flowers.
Treatment for eye diseases begins with: Grind aged ink thickly with water and instill into the eyes.
Reduce reading, reduce thinking/worrying, focus on inner observation, simplify external affairs, rise early and sleep late.
Fan Ning of the Jin Dynasty often suffered from eye disease and sought a prescription from Zhang Zhan. Zhang Zhan wrote these six matters, adding at the end: "The above formula was obtained in youth by Song Yangzi, who taught it to Lu Dongmen."
These two sentences are maxims of the sages. The Way of Taiji: movement generates Yang, stillness generates Yin. Washing the head causes movement in the upper body, which necessarily generates Yang and damages the eyes; [it is] suitable for the feet... (Text fragment/corruption here, implying balance through lower body regulation).
(Those ordinary people who die of illness but complete their natural lifespan, although considered unfortunate, are still dying a 'proper death' (Zheng Ming). If it is a sudden acute disease or violent misfortune... such as hanging or drowning... to respond to changes.)
(Formula found in Volume 1 Upper, Treatment Gate, Si Jun Zi Tang Appendix Formula) Add Tian Ma Formula: Treats sudden collapse/death (sudden falling down, loss of consciousness), lockjaw, foaming at the mouth. (Wind-dryness causes tendon tension, hence lockjaw; foaming at the mouth is caused by vigorous Wind and surging Qi, an image of Wind arriving like a surging tide). Body warmth. (Wind is a Yang pathogen, hence causing body warmth). Pulse is deficient and large. Both pathogenic Qi and Righteous Qi are deficient.
If the pulse is deficient and one uses acrid-dispersing agents to expel Wind, the faint Qi will surely cease; this is not the correct treatment. Therefore, use the sweet-warm properties of Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) to urgently consolidate the Qi.
