(From *Jin Gui Yao Lue*) Treats women during pregnancy who suffer from abdominal cramping pain. ("𦚿" pronounced jiū, also jiǎo, refers to acute, spasmodic abdominal pain.)
Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (one jin), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (half a jin), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (four liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (three liang). The above six herbs are pounded into a powder. Take one fangcun bi (a square-inch scoop) of the powder, taken with wine.
The cause of this pain is: deficiency of righteous qi (vital energy), allowing yin pathogens to invade yang, causing water qi to overcome spleen earth. The spleen qi becomes stagnant and fails to extend freely. When stagnant qi seeks release but the earth qi remains disordered, acute pain ensues.
*Jin Gui Yao Lue* states: A woman who has a pre-existing zheng disease (masses formed by blood stasis) in her uterus, whose menstruation has ceased for less than three months, yet experiences continuous spotting or bleeding, and feels fetal movement above the umbilicus. If this were fetal movement at six months of gestation, it would be because conception occurred when menstruation was regular in the first three months, and such movement is normal. Bleeding occurring after menstruation has ceased for three months is due to [the mass]. This happens because as long as the zheng mass remains, the new blood cannot nourish the fetus. One should purge the zheng mass; Guizhi Fuling Wan (Cinnamon Twig and Poria Pill) is the primary formula. (Xu Zhongke comments: When women encounter cold during menstruation, residual blood condenses into masses. "Zheng" refers to tangible signs. However, women often have zheng diseases; if the mass is not in the uterus, menstruation can still occur and conception can happen. Once menstruation stops, pregnancy is established. If bleeding continues after pregnancy, it is called lou xia (leaking down). Now, since it is less than three months and bleeding persists, it is not normal fetal movement. If fetal movement were below the umbilicus, the fetus would truly be about to fall. Since it is above the umbilicus, it is because the new blood gathered monthly is obstructed by the qi of the mass and cannot circulate properly. This is not a problem with the fetus, hence it is said that the entrenched zheng is the harm. A chronic disease that is difficult to cure is called gu (entrenched); affecting something without cause is called hai (harm). By the sixth month, fetal movement occurs. Compared to the first three months when menstruation was regular, if bleeding resumes after three months of amenorrhea, it indicates that the previous zheng mass has become hard and firm and does not dissipate. Therefore, purging it is necessary for safety.)
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Fuling (Poria), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Taoren (Persicae Semen - remove skin and tips, stir-fried), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix). Use equal parts, grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of rabbit feces. Take before meals daily.
Guizhi and Shaoyao represent one yang and one yin; Fuling and Danpi represent one qi and one blood. Together they regulate cold and heat and support righteous qi. Taoren is used to break down evil blood and eliminate zheng masses.
