Note: The reason this formula is named "Xie Qing" (Draining Green/Blue) lies in the principle of draining the Wood element of the East (Jia-Yi). When wind pathogen invades the Jueyin organ associated with Wind-Wood, like attracts like, and the pathological momentum inevitably becomes strong.

(Jie'an) Treats rigid spasm (Gang Jing) and flaccid spasm (Rou Jing), presenting with red face, neck stiffness, head shaking, locked jaw, and opisthotonos. The treatment method is the same as that for convulsions. (Spasm belongs to Taiyang wind-stroke, complicated by secondary invasion of cold and dampness. Wind is dry and moving; cold pulls and tightens; dampness adheres and constricts. Hence, head shaking, locked jaw, neck stiffness, and opisthotonos occur. Wind carrying cold causes blood stasis and absence of sweat, termed Rigid Spasm; wind carrying dampness causes fluid loss and presence of sweat, termed Flaccid Spasm.)
