Treats phlegm-fluid retention in the diaphragm.
Guang Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, remove the white pith, 8 liang, wash and soak in salt water), Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, honey-fried). Make into pills using steamed bun paste. Alternatively, boil the Chenpi in salt water until soft, dry it in the sun, and combine with other ingredients to dry dampness and promote qi movement. When dampness is removed, phlegm dissipates; when qi flows smoothly, phlegm descends. Salt has a moistening and descending effect that softens hardness; moistening and descending causes phlegm to lower, and softening hardness causes phlegm to resolve.
(From *Ruizhu Tang*) Treats phlegm generated by excessive alcohol consumption and improper diet, causing distension and stifling sensation in the chest and diaphragm, and coughing at dawn (around 3-5 AM). (Excessive drinking leads to spleen dampness; excessive consumption of pungent, hot, or greasy foods generates phlegm. Phlegm obstructs the chest and diaphragm, causing fullness and stifling. Coughing at dawn occurs because stomach heat enters the lungs at this time.)
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, prepared with ginger juice), Danxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile, 1 jin), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, remove white pith), Laifuzi (Raphani Semen, raw), Suzi (Perillae Fructus, those that sink in water are preferred), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus).
Phlegm arises from dampness; Banxia and Nanxing serve to dry dampness. Phlegm rises with qi; Suzi and Laifuzi serve to direct qi downward. Phlegm forms due to qi stagnation; Qingpi and Chenpi serve to regulate qi and eliminate stagnation.
Treats phlegm caused by deficiency-cold of the lung and kidney, where water overflows and transforms into phlegm. Or for the elderly with yin deficiency and insufficient blood and qi, who suffer from external wind-cold invasion, presenting with cough, vomiting, nausea, and copious sputum. This is a miraculous effective formula, a modification of Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction).
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2-3 qian), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 3-5 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1.5 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Fuling (Poria, 2 qian), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root, 1 qian). Add...
For rapid onset/severe cases, add Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen)... qian.
(From *Ren Shu*) Treats wind-stroke affecting the lung meridian, causing dizziness and headache, cough with copious sputum. (Excess wind causes qi congestion; qi congestion causes phlegm to rise, hence headache and cough. *Zhizhi Fang* states: For cough due to wind, there is nasal congestion and heavy voice. For cough due to cold, there is shivering and aversion to cold. With heat, there is irritability and restlessness. With dampness, the condition is lingering. If there is blood stasis, there is a fishy stifling sensation in the diaphragm; if there is fluid retention, there is palpitations and a loose feeling in the epigastrium. *San Yin Fang* records: A woman suffered from toothache unresponsive to treatment, with swelling of the cheeks. She was cured by fumigating and rinsing her mouth with a large dose decoction of Jinfeicao San.)
Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos, also known as Jinfeicao), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica, 1.5 qian), Chifuling (Poria with Red Brown Skin, 6 fen), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 5 fen), Gancao (Licorice Root, ...).
If there is heat, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix)...
Eliminate phlegm and direct qi downward.
Thus, it directs qi downward and promotes diuresis...
