(Zhang Jingyue) This formula is most effective in nourishing and tonifying the Spleen and Kidney.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, those with a sweet taste are preferred. Those with a bitter taste should not be used. Soak in rice-washing water overnight, slice, and stir-fry.) Dahuaishu (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, steamed and mashed; these two herbs are used in equal parts) Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata, processed by nine steamings and nine sun-dryings to make pills. Take when hungry).
Treats spontaneous sweating that does not stop, Qi deficiency leading to exterior weakness, and susceptibility to wind-cold pathogens. (The function of Yang Qi is to protect the exterior and maintain its firmness. When Yang Qi is deficient, it cannot defend the exterior, body fluids fail to consolidate and leak easily, and there is aversion to wind. This differs from spontaneous sweating caused by common cold; the latter is attributed to excess pathogenic factors, whereas this condition is attributed to exterior deficiency. Therefore, tonification and purgation methods differ accordingly.) Huangqi (Honey-fried Astragali Radix), 1 liang; Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), 1 liang; Baizhu (Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), 2 liang. Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose.
Huangqi tonifies Qi and specifically consolidates the muscular exterior, thus serving as the Sovereign herb. Baizhu benefits the Spleen, and the Spleen governs the muscles, thus serving as the Minister herb. Fangfeng dispels wind and acts as an attendant to wind-dispelling herbs, exerting its wind-dispelling effect.
Decocting the aforementioned herbs in equal proportions yields the name Huangqi Tang. Jiegu (Zhang Yuansu) used it to replace Guizhi Tang to treat fever with sweating, weak pulse, and aversion to wind and cold during spring and summer. If aversion to wind is severe...
(Wang Jinggong / Wang Anshi) Treats seminal emission during dreams, palpitations, and depression/stagnation. (The Kidney stores Essence, and the Heart stores Spirit. Errant fire moves recklessly, causing a lack of communication between the Heart and Kidney. Upper excess and lower deficiency lead to seminal emission in dreams. Heart deficiency and spirit disturbance cause frequent palpitations. Worry and thought cause Qi stagnation, resulting in depression/stagnation.) Shanyao (Ginger-juice stir-fried Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix? *Note: Context implies Dioscoreae Rhizoma*, 2 liang); Renshen (Ginseng Radix); Huangqi (Astragali Radix); Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, stir-fried); Fuling (Poria); Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, 1 liang); Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 3 qian); Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 2 qian).
The Heart belongs to Minister Fire (Ruler Fire). When Ruler Fire moves, Minister Fire follows. Minister Fire resides in the Liver and Gallbladder. When Kidney Yin is deficient, Essence fails to consolidate. When Liver Yang is strong, Qi... Renshen, Huangqi... Water, and Spleen... Used as... Formula, saying:
Treats Spleen and Stomach deficiency, indigestion, vomiting, or diarrhea. (Earth is the mother of all things. When Spleen Earth is injured, it loses its function of healthy transportation and transformation, leading to indigestion. Accompanied by Cold, it causes vomiting; accompanied by Dampness, it causes loose stools. As food intake decreases, the Zang-Fu organs cannot receive Qi, leading to increasing emaciation and weakness.) Renshen (Ginseng Radix); Baizhu (Soil-stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); Fuling (Poria); Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma); Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma); BianDou (Faba Seed); Yiren (Coicis Semen); Lianrou (Lotus Seed Embryo, heart removed); Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium); Sharen (Amomi Fructus); Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix).
Treating Spleen and Stomach disorders involves tonifying deficiency, eliminating dampness, promoting circulation of stagnation, and regulating Qi. Renshen, Baizhu, Fuling, Gancao, Shanyao, Yiren, BianDou, Lianrou are all tonifying... Gancao, connecting to heaven...
