Treats hemoptysis (coughing up blood), hematemesis (vomiting blood), as well as postpartum blood syncope (fainting due to blood loss after childbirth) and chronic cough due to Yin deficiency, with internal heat steaming like a raging fire. (Blood is generated by the Heart, controlled by the Spleen, stored in the Liver, and distributed by the Lung. When quiet, it returns to the meridians; when heated, it flows recklessly. Fire damages the Lung collaterals, causing blood to exit with cough, sometimes mixed with phlegm.) Tongbian (Child's Urine) (Obtain urine from an eleven- or twelve-year-old healthy boy who does not consume meat, spices, or pungent foods, clear as water.) Discard the initial and final portions, drink while hot. In winter, warm it with decoction or take it mixed with Lotus Root Juice (Ou Zhi) and Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao); if there is phlegm, add a little Ginger Juice (Jiang Zhi). Child's urine is salty and cold, capable of descending fire, nourishing Yin, moistening the Lung, and dissipating stasis; thus, it treats blood disorders, fire-induced cough, and blood syncope with miraculous effect. (Chu Cheng of Northern Qi said: The throat cannot tolerate foreign objects; even a hair will cause coughing. Once blood seeps in, the more it seeps, the more one coughs, and the more one coughs, the more it seeps. Drinking urine saves one in a hundred cases, whereas taking cold-natured medicines results in death in all cases. Li Shizhen said: When urine enters the Stomach, following the Qi transformation of the Spleen, it ascends to return to the Lung, descends through the water passages, and enters the Bladder, retracing its original path; thus, it can treat Lung diseases and guide fire downward. Its salty flavor enters the Blood level, so for treating blood diseases, it should be drunk hot; heat preserves true Qi, making its action swift, whereas cold leaves only its salty-cold nature. Li Shicai said: Refined Qiushi (Autumn Stone) loses its true Yuan Qi gradually and is far inferior to child's urine. Drinking one's own urine is called Hui Lun Jiu.)
Treats chronic cough lasting many years, Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy/Withered Lung) with hemoptysis, and red sputum.
Baiji (Bletilla Rhizome) ground into powder, two qian per dose, taken with Rice Porridge Soup (Nuomi Tang) before bedtime.
Among the five Zang organs of humans, only the Lungs have the capacity to regenerate if their lobes are damaged and necrotic. Baiji is bitter and acrid with astringent properties, aligning with the Metal energy of Autumn, capable of tonifying the Lung and stopping bleeding; thus, it treats lung damage with red sputum. It can also escharotic necrotic ulcers and dead flesh, serving as a supreme medicine for removing decay and generating new tissue.
Treats fire above the Diaphragm causing morning hemoptysis. (The Lung belongs to Metal and is a clear and肃 (descending/purifying) organ. Wood and Fire burning and scorching cause Metal to suffer punishment, resulting in hemoptysis. Morning hours of Yin and Mao are times when Wood is prosperous and generates Fire.) Persistent redness of both cheeks. (These are the areas corresponding to the Lung and Liver.) Unclear sensation in the throat. (Of the twelve regular meridians, only the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian remains superficial and does not pass through the Diaphragm and throat; all others ascend along the throat and can cause disease, with Ministerial and Sovereign Fire being particularly severe. Various fires counterflow upward, causing throat discomfort.)
Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 10 liang), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Shishuang (Diospyros Fructus Frost), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 3 liang). Processed into honey pills.
Bohe is acrid and fragrant, ascending and floating, dispelling wind and clearing heat. (Dispelling wind soothes the Liver; clearing heat purifies the Lung; hence, it can treat blood disorders.) Fangfeng is the guiding herb for blood medications, draining the Lung and searching the Liver. (Fangfeng drains Lung fire and disperses Liver fire, acting as the guiding herb for upper-body blood disorders.) Chuanxiong is a Qi-moving herb within the Blood category, ascending clarity and dissipating stasis. Shishuang generates fluids and moistens the Lung; Xijiao cools the Heart and purifies the Liver. Gancao moderates the upward-flaring fire; Jiegeng restricts the upward floatation of other herbs. Furthermore, the combination of Gancao and Jiegeng forms a premier formula for clearing the throat and benefiting the Diaphragm.
