(From *Jin Gui Yao Lue*) Treats the condition of fire qi rebelling upward, causing discomfort in the throat.
Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, seven sheng) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, one sheng) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, three liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, two liang) Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, twelve pieces) Jing Mi (Oriza Sativa Semen, three he) Cook with one dou of water.
Yu Jiayan stated: This is a syndrome where the fluids of the stomach are dried up, and deficient fire flares upward. If cold-natured medicines are used, the fire may rise further; merely knowing to contend with the fire by adding Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus) as auxiliary agents.
(From Zhang Zhongjing) Treats Tai Yang disease presenting with knotted or intermittent pulse (Jie Dai Mai) and palpitations (Xin Dong Ji). Also treats Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy), characterized by copious coughing and spitting of saliva, and a sensation of warmth and fluid movement in the chest. (A pulse that pauses but recovers spontaneously is called Jie [Knotted]; one that does not recover spontaneously is called Dai [Intermittent]. This indicates deficiency and decline of Qi and Blood, unable to sustain each other. Palpitations indicate internal deficiency of True Qi. In Fei Wei, excessive spitting occurs because the fluids from the Stomach ascend but are transformed into saliva by dryness-heat.) The *Bao Jian* uses this formula to treat hiccups.
Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, four liang) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, stir-fried with clam powder, two liang) Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, one jin) Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed) Ma Ren (Semen Cannabis)
Ren Shen, Mai Dong, Gan Cao, and Da Zao benefit Middle Qi and restore the pulse. Sheng Di Huang and E Jiao nourish Ying Blood and calm the Heart. Ma Ren provides lubrication to ease the Spleen and Stomach.
Sheng Jiang and Gui Zhi (added as acrid-warm agents) help regulate Lung cough.
Using Zhi Gan Cao Tang is for tonifying deficiency and wasting conditions. This differs from treating Yin deficiency with empty heat; thus, Fei Wei presents with both cold and heat variations.
Treats various Qi stagnations, various Wei syndromes (atrophy), panting, and vomiting.
Shuang Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaf after frost. Acquires Metal Qi, becoming soft and supple without withering; selected as the Sovereign herb, stems and branches removed, three qian.) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum. Acquires pure and descending Qi...) Hu Ma Ren (Semen Sesami Nigri...) Pi Pa Ye (Loquat Leaf...) Sheng Di Huang... Yu Jiayan stated: Qi stagnation belonging to the Lung is due to Lung dryness. Ancient and modern formulas for Qi stagnation mostly use acrid-aromatic Qi-moving herbs, absolutely lacking... to treat panting.
