(Zhang Zhongjing) Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) where there is heat in the chest causing nausea, and cold in the stomach causing abdominal pain. (Cheng Wuji states: After purgation in a patient with dampness pathology, a coating resembling a fur appears on the tongue. This is because there is heat in the Dantian and cold in the chest; this indicates pathogenic factors entering the interior, resulting in lower heat and upper cold. In this case, Shanghan pathogenic factors have transmitted to the interior, resulting in lower cold and upper heat. Pathogenic factors in the stomach prevent Yin from ascending, governing only the lower part, causing lower cold and abdominal pain; Yang fails to descend, governing only the upper part, causing heat in the chest and desire to vomit. It is appropriate to administer this decoction to regulate the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang.)
Huanglian (Stir-fried) Ganjiang (Stir-fried) Guizhi Gancao (3 liang) Renshen (2 liang) Banxia (0.5 sheng) Dazao (12 pieces)
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) is bitter and cold, clearing heat to descend Yang; Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) are acrid and warm, dispelling cold to ascend Yin; Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) assists righteous Qi to expel pathogens; Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) harmonizes the Stomach and stops vomiting; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) regulate from the Middle Jiao.
(Ji Yan Fang) Treats insomnia due to Gallbladder deficiency with phlegm-heat, empty vexation, palpitations, bitter taste in the mouth, and vomiting of saliva. (Gallbladder heat causes bitter taste; Gallbladder deficiency with Qi stagnation leads to the Spleen producing phlegm-saliva, resulting in vexation and vomiting. After Shanghan disease, this syndrome is common.)
Banxia (Processed with Shengjiang) Fuling (or Fushen) Chenpi (White removed) Gancao Zhishi (Stir-fried with bran) Zhuru Add Shengjiang for decoction, or add Zao.
Banxia (due to its ability to move Qi and resolve phlegm), combined with the acrid-warm nature of Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia, and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), guides out phlegm and stops vomiting, thereby warming the Gallbladder. (Dai Shi says: Phlegm in the Gallbladder meridian causes the Spirit not to reside in its house, leading to restlessness. Used to treat insomnia. By analogy: Various... Add Renshen, Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), named Shiwei Wendan Tang, treating nocturnal emission and startle.)
(Zhu Danxi) Universally treats Six Types of Stagnation, manifesting as chest and diaphragm oppression, acid regurgitation, vomiting, and indigestion. (The Six Stagnations refer to Qi stagnation, Blood stagnation, Phlegm stagnation, Fire stagnation, Dampness stagnation, and Food stagnation. Among these six, Qi stagnation is primary; when Qi moves freely, stagnation disperses. Acid regurgitation and vomiting are caused by phlegm-fire. Indigestion is caused by failure of Qi movement. Zhu Danxi said: When Qi ascends, stagnation naturally descends. Hua Boren said: Stagnation refers to the accumulation of Qi, Blood, and fluids that cannot be dispersed; what should ascend does not ascend, what should descend does not descend, what should transform does not transform, thus transmission and transformation functions fail, and diseases appear. In Qi stagnation, there is chest and diaphragmatic pain. In Dampness stagnation, there is whole-body pain or joint pain, triggered by yin-cold. In Phlegm stagnation, panting upon movement, pulse is deep and slippery. In Heat stagnation, dizziness and blurred vision, dark urine, pulse is deep and rapid. In Blood stagnation, weakness in the four limbs but ability to eat. In Food stagnation, belching with sour taste, abdominal fullness, inability to eat.)
Xiangfu (Vinegar-fried) Cangzhu (Soaked in rice water and stir-fried) Fuxiong (Chuanxiong) Shenqu Zhizi (Stir-fried until black) in equal proportions. Make pills using Shenqu paste. If Dampness stagnation, add Fuling, Baizhu, Binglang.
Wu Hegao said: Yueju means to vent and resolve stagnation. Xiangfu opens Qi stagnation, Cangzhu dries Dampness stagnation, Fuxiong regulates Blood stagnation, Zhizi resolves Fire stagnation... The main agent lies in... desire to descend... Fuzi Yin... down... already...
