[Ju Fang (Prescription Bureau)] Treats blood deficiency with liver dryness, bone-steaming tidal fever, and tidal fever with cough. (If there is a dry cough, Zhu Danxi said: it is extremely difficult to treat; this belongs to the syndrome of fire stagnation, where phlegm stagnates and suppresses the fire. With pathogenic factors in the middle jiao, use Xiaoyao San to open and resolve it, and use yin-nourishing medicines for the lower part to achieve a cure.) Alternating chills and fever, dry mouth, scanty or difficult urination, and irregular menstruation. For any stagnation-fire in the Liver and Gallbladder meridians causing hypochondriac pain, dizziness, epigastric pain at the heart's region, radiating pain in the scapula, frequent redness and pain of the eyes extending to the Taiyang meridian, or women suffering from Liver injury due to depression and anger leading to reckless bleeding, leukorrhea (red and white discharge), amenorrhea, lithuria (sand-like urine), metrorrhagia, and turbid discharge, all these syndromes are suitable for treatment with modifications of this formula. The *I Ching* says: "Wind disperses it," which is the principle here.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (soaked in wine), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (stir-fried in wine, 1.5 qian), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (stir-fried with soil), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (honey-fried, 0.5 qian). Add少许 (a small amount) of Wei Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum) and Bohe (Herba Menthae).
When the Liver is deficient, blood pathology occurs; Danggui and Baishao nourish blood and astringe yin. When Wood is excessive, Earth declines; Gancao and Baizhu harmonize the middle and tonify Spleen Earth. (Tonifying Earth generates Metal, taking the meaning of unblocking phlegm... [text fragment] ...Xiaoyao San blows away the stagnant qi, allowing stagnant qi to flow freely. Generally, trees like wind shaking; cold causes withering, warmth promotes growth. Chaihu and Bohe, being acrid, can disperse Shaoyang qi. This is the subtlety of ancient physicians in formulating prescriptions. For severe cases, add Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae) stir-fried with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) to form Zuojin Wan. Huanglian clears Heart fire. Liver qi shares the same nature... [text fragment] ...to calm Liver Wood. When Liver Wood is balanced, it does not generate Heart fire; if Heart fire does not control Lung Metal, then Lung Metal can restrain Liver Wood. Not using Zuojin Wan to control Wood is why it is named Zuojin Wan. This is a clever method within this approach, yet still insufficient. Subsequently, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan, adding Chaihu to nourish Kidney Water, enabling it to generate Liver Wood. Xiaoyao San uses wind to disperse it; Dihuang Yinzi uses rain to moisten it, so that Wood may thrive according to its nature. Once the stagnation of Wood and Fire is relieved, Wood no longer overacts on Earth downwards, and Earth receives moisture, avoiding dryness hazards; Lung Metal and Kidney Water naturally generate each other. Those who understand the Five Methods proceed thus. Extending this, for alternating chills and fever, aversion to cold and heat, vomiting with acid regurgitation, stomach discomfort, chest and hypochondriac pain, dizziness with night sweats, jaundice, epidemic febrile diseases, hernia, and undigested food diarrhea, all are indications for this formula. Extending further to Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Shangfeng (Wind Strike), all external contractions should be viewed as stagnation syndromes. Using Xiaoyao San with modifications yields efficacy without fail. Although Xiao Chaihu Tang and Sini San are effective, they are not as responsive as this formula. If relief occurs after one dose but recurs shortly after, or recurs frequently and worsens, this must be due to deficiency in the lower jiao. Do not re-administer purgatives; instead, switch to warming and tonifying agents. For Yang deficiency, use Sijunzi Tang with warming herbs; for Yin deficiency, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan. There is no need to elaborate further. It is also said: I suffered from Cold Damage in winter, presenting symptoms requiring Mahuang Tang or Guizhi Tang, treated as Cold Stagnation, without aversion to cold... [text fragment] ...creative theory. Since it is stated as Cold Pathogen, why does it enter the interior and turn into Heat? One does not realize that this is the body's own Fire, suppressed by Cold, thus becoming pure Heat. Sanhuang Jiedu Tang resolves the Fire; Gegen and Shengma employ "releasing stagnation of Fire"; San Chengqi Tang employs "purging stagnation of Earth"; Mu Yu Da Zhi addresses "reaching/stagnation of Wood." This principle is very simple. Liu Shouzhen believed that when using Mahuang and Guizhi, cooling medicines must be added. Zhang Hezi added Cangzhu to Liushen Tang. Tao Hua believed Jiwei Qianghuo Tang could replace the three formulas. All are incorrect. Unlike Xiaoyao San, which truly can... [text fragment] ...boil Kidney Water, when Wood becomes prosperous, lacking the root of generation and moisturization, fever and thirst occur, which is not an external contraction. Remainder... Adding Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan) and Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae), named Bawei Xiaoyao San. (Xue Yi) Treats Liver injury due to anger, blood deficiency causing dim vision.
