Among the medical profession, only Bian Que has inherited the lineage of Qibo and Huangdi (the mythical founders of Traditional Chinese Medicine). Bian Que was a person from the time of the Yellow Emperor; he received the *Taiyi Shenming Lun* (Treatise on Taiyi Divine Illumination) taught by the Yellow Emperor, and authored the *Wuse Maizhen* (Five-Color Pulse Diagnosis) and *Sanshi Bingyuan* (Sources of Diseases in Three Eras). The medical knowledge later received by Chunyu Yi and Hua Tuo originated from this source.
The second Bian Que was a person from the Warring States period. His surname was Qin and his given name was Yueren. He was from Linzi, the capital of Qi. He compiled the content of the *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) to write the *Nanjing* (Classic of Difficult Issues, also known as *Eighty-One Difficulties*). Lamenting that few had received the transmission of orthodox medical methods, he often compared himself to Bian Que, stating that the orthodox school of medicine was uniquely transmitted to him, making him a reincarnation of Bian Que; thus, he gave himself the pseudonym Bian Que.
The third Bian Que is Dou Cai of the Great Song Dynasty. I studied the *Suwen* (Basic Questions) and *Lingshu* (Spiritual Pivot), received the esoteric teachings of the Yellow Emperor, reformed the greatest flaws of ancient and modern physicians, and preserved the lives of the common people under heaven. I often take upon myself the role of Bian Que. This is not an arrogant comparison with ancients, but is based on evidence.
Once, while passing through a rural inn in Quzhou, I saw a woman suffering from generalized edema sitting on the ground outdoors. I asked her, "Why do you not sit inside the door?" She replied, "Yesterday, the Earth God informed me that Bian Que would pass through here tomorrow, so I could seek treatment from him. Therefore, I waited here for him." I said, "If you listen to me, I will save you." She said, "You are not a physician; how can you treat illness?" I said, "Although I am not a physician, I have received the true transmission of Bian Que and possess miraculous prescriptions, which is why the deity forewarned you." I then gave her ten pills of *Baoming Yanshou Dan* (Life-Preserving Longevity Pill) to take. That night, she urinated approximately two sheng (a traditional unit of volume), and at dawn (wugeng), she felt hungry. For the second dose, she took fifteen pills, and I stimulated the Mingguan acupoint on the left side, applying moxibustion for 200 moxa cones (zhuang). Five days later, she passed five or six pieces of white purulent matter in her stool, and within half a month, she was fully recovered. The woman said, "Truly, Bian Que has been reborn."
(Note: I treated several other patients with this same condition, presenting with edema, rapid breathing, inability to lie flat on a bed, and refusal of all food and drink. Since they lacked the pills and refused moxibustion, I used heavy doses of dried ginger (Ganjiang) and prepared aconite (Fuzi) for more than ten prescriptions. Their physical forms returned to normal, and their appetite recovered. This demonstrates that if one trusts and utilizes warming and transforming methods, there is still hope for survival even without moxibustion.)
I believe Bian Que relied solely on his talent, traveled among the states, and was assassinated by fellow practitioners. Hua Tuo also did not transmit his methods and was killed by others. Both met their ends because they kept their skills secret, thereby attracting jealousy. I now transmit these esoteric teachings to the world. Anyone who shares my aspirations and is willing to learn the orthodox transmission may well call themselves Bian Que. ("What kind of person was Shun? What kind of person am I? Those who strive can be like him.")
