Except for pregnancy, the diseases suffered by women are mostly the same as those of men. However, men primarily rely on Yuan Yang (the original vitality and driving force of human life), while women primarily rely on Yin Blood (blood and body fluids that nourish the body). Men often suffer from diseases due to Kidney Deficiency, whereas women often suffer from diseases due to the deficiency of the Chong and Ren meridians.
The Chong Meridian is the Sea of Blood, and the Ren Meridian governs the uterus and fetus. The onset of menstruation originates from both the Chong and Ren meridians. If menstruation occurs once a month at regular intervals, it indicates health; if delayed, it indicates a Deficiency pattern; if premature, it indicates an Excess pattern. A pulse that is deep, fine, and choppy, accompanied by amenorrhea, indicates Cold-Deficiency. Metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding) is caused by the collapse of the Chong and Ren meridians. "Beng" implies falling or losing control. Leukorrhea (white vaginal discharge) is caused by coldness in the Ren Meridian. Since the Ren Meridian is referred to as the gate of the womb, such conditions arise. Fever accompanied by loss of appetite indicates Deficiency of Qi and Blood and Spleen-Stomach weakness; fever without loss of appetite indicates Heart Deficiency. The treatment methods for other diseases are the same as those for men. (Establishing a separate department for women was originally unnecessary. Physicians who claim expertise in formulas and pulse diagnosis but fail to understand the distinctions between men and women, the differences between Yin and Yang, the origins of the Chong and Ren meridians, the cycles of menstruation, diseases of conception, and disorders of childbirth and lactation are merely charlatans practicing trivial skills; how can they be called masters of great medicine?)
If a woman has abundant Blood and deficient Qi, she is likely to have many children; if she has abundant Qi and deficient Blood, she is likely to be infertile. If her hair is black, complexion lustrous, skin smooth and glossy, and axillary hair sparse, this indicates deficient Qi and abundant Blood, suggesting she will bear many children. If her hair is yellow, complexion dull, muscles rough and dry, and axillary hair abundant, this indicates abundant Qi and deficient Blood, suggesting infertility. During intercourse, if the female essence arrives first and the male essence follows later, the Blood opens to envelop the Essence, indicating the birth of a male child. If the male essence arrives first and the female essence follows later, the Essence opens to envelop the Blood, indicating the birth of a female child. If the male and female essences and blood do not arrive in a coordinated sequence, conception will not occur. (For the sake of offspring, the emphasis lies in selecting a wife; if the woman is dignified, the child will be steady and solemn. Intercourse with moderation results in beautiful children. After birth, one must carefully select a wet nurse; the child sucks her milk and learns from her guidance, often becoming similar to her. Although innate temperament is inherited from parents, postnatal physical constitution often resembles the wet nurse.)
