Whenever excessive worry and overthinking deplete the Heart Blood, or when consumption of raw, cold, and hard foods damages the Spleen and Stomach, causing the Yin and Yang to fail in their ascending and descending functions, leading to stagnation in the Middle Jiao, resulting in a sense of mental vagueness and palpitations below the heart, one should treat with Laifu Dan (Revival Pill), Jin Ye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill), and Bichengqie San (Cubeb Powder). If the Heart Blood is deficient, Duhai Dadan (Great Pill of Solitary Bone) must be used; alternatively, Yanshou Dan (Longevity Pill) may also be employed. (Injury from worry and thinking constitutes the primary syndrome of Zhangchong [palpitations]; injury from diet constitutes an accompanying syndrome, with slight differences in deficiency and excess. Examining the syndrome for treatment ensures accuracy.)
These conditions arise from stagnant fire and retained phlegm. Consumption of raw and cold foods filling the domains of the Yangming and Taiyin meridians can also cause disease, for which Quanzhen Dan (Complete True Pill) is suitable. If there is severe cold in the stomach region and Quanzhen Dan or Jiangfu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) fails to cure it, moxa should be applied to Zhongwan (CV12) for seventy moxibustion units. If Spicy Heart Pain erupts severely, approaching death, but the six pulses remain, urgently apply moxa to Zuomingguan (EX-UE9) on the left side for fifty moxibustion units to restore consciousness, while internally administering Laifu Dan and Bichengqie San. If pain comes and goes intermittently with vomiting of clear fluid, this indicates roundworms attacking the Pericardium Collateral; administer Anchong San (Worm-Anchoring Powder). If sudden heart pain occurs with deep and faint six pulses, incessant sweating, cyanotic nails, and cold feet extending past the knees, this is Zhenxintong [True Heart Pain], which is incurable. (The Heart is the master of the whole body and cannot be offended in the slightest; residing in correctness without deviation, how could it easily suffer disease? Any pain that is not true Heart Pain is actually Pericardium Collateral pain, or Spleen pain, Stomach pain, or Diaphragm pain. Examine the cause and pathogenic factor, whether Qi stagnation or Phlegm; although there are nine classifications and differences between deficiency and excess, deficiency patterns are generally more common, though excess patterns exist occasionally. Careful examination and treatment will prevent errors.)
Wind, Cold, and Dampness combining to form Bi Syndrome [obstruction] result in wandering pain, or spasms and contractures in the arms, waist, legs, and knees, with tightness pulling at both elbows. This is Cold pathogen gathering between the muscle intervals, known in medical texts as Baihu Lijiefeng [White Tiger Joint-Wandering Wind]. The treatment method is to apply fifty moxibustion units directly on the painful area, leading to spontaneous recovery; if herbal decoctions are ineffective, this method is the fastest. For mild cases, moxibustion is unnecessary: use two liang of Caowu End (Aconitum Kusnezoffii Radix powder) and two qian of white flour, mixed with vinegar and boiled into a thin paste, spread on white cloth, and applied hot to the affected area overnight for cure. (Bi Syndrome refers to the coagulation and closure of Qi and Blood preventing their flow, remaining stagnant outside the five Zang organs, combining to cause disease. Furthermore, when pathogenic factors enter the Yin, Bi Syndrome forms; therefore, treating Bi Syndrome requires warming methods. Medical texts often treat it as an excess pattern, but deficiency patterns are also quite numerous.)
