This is due to accumulated heat in the stomach not yet eliminated, or caused by taking Cinnabar (Dan Sha) and Aconite (Fu Zi). It is suitable to take Huanglian Danggui Shaoyao Tang. If pus is passed in the stool, Rusheng Bing should be used to resolve the accumulation and achieve cure. The *Classic* states: "Even if the heat is severe, it will not cause death." However, if Yin Qi is excessive, death may occur within an instant; beware of this. (The error of hot medicines can be resolved with one dose of cold medicine; the mistake of using cold medicines is difficult to cure even with ten doses of hot medicines. Furthermore, accumulated heat is easy to resolve and treat, whereas deep-seated Yin cold is hard to heal and difficult to diagnose clearly. Clinicians must carefully comprehend this.)
This is caused by deficiency and weakness of the Spleen and Kidney, with Cold Qi rushing upward. One should take Jiang Fu Tang and Laifu Dan. (This symptom should be hiccuping; if it were belching [Yi], there would be no risk of death, as seen in the following two cases.)
Clinical Cases:
One patient suffered from Cold Damage (Shanghan) for eight days. The pulse was large and tight, the body was yellow, purple spots appeared, he had belching, and his toes felt cold extending to the instep. This is a Taiyin syndrome, which is the most severe and difficult to treat. I moxaed Mingguan (50 moxa cones) and Guanyuan (200 moxa cones), and administered Jinye Dan and Zhongru Fen. After four days, he sweated and recovered.
Another patient suffered from Cold Damage for six days. The pulse was wiry and tight, the body was yellow, and he had spontaneous sweating. This was also a Taiyin syndrome. He first took Jinye Dan and received moxibustion at Mingguan. The patient refused moxibustion. In Cold Damage, only Taiyin and Shaoyin syndromes cause death most rapidly. If moxibustion is not performed early, medication will be ineffective. He did not believe me, and on the ninth day, he died from bloody diarrhea. (Ignoring good advice often leads to such outcomes. When symptoms change and bleeding occurs, quack doctors still attribute it to the heat of sulfur forcing blood to move recklessly, or pain caused by drug expulsion. They instead use cold medicines, adding insult to injury. Even after death, people clamor, blaming the harm of hot medicines. Good intentions are often slandered, and this happens frequently. However, there is the Way of Heaven; why worry about human gossip?)
A third patient suffered from Cold Damage for six days with slight jaundice. A doctor prescribed Yinyin Tang. The next day, the yellow color deepened, and his whole body turned like gardenia yellow. This was caused by the misadministration of cold medicines in a Taiyin syndrome, leading to Liver Wood insulting Spleen Earth. I moxaed Mingguan (50 cones) and administered Jinye Dan, resulting in recovery. (Jaundice in Cold Damage has Yin and Yang distinctions, but those caused by Spleen Yin-dampness, known as Yin Jaundice, are more common. This must be known.)
A fourth patient suffered from Cold Damage. From the onset, he had cold limbs, and his pulse beat 8-9 times per breath. Various physicians believed he would certainly die. I said, "This is Yin Poison," and gave him one cup of Jiang Fu Tang. By midnight, he sweated and recovered. If one considers the rapid pulse as Heat and administers cold medicines, death is inevitable. (Quack doctors seeing this would likely assume it is Sha disease, forbid the use of official medicinal ingredients, specialize in needle pricking, and even allow the patient to drink cold water until ice-cold collapse occurs.)
