Whenever excessive consumption of cold foods injures the Spleen and Stomach, a sensation of fullness and obstruction (Pi) arises in the epigastrium. This is easy to treat; taking one dose of Quanzhen Dan (Complete True Pill) will result in a complete recovery. Generally speaking, injury to the Stomach manifests as chest fullness, while injury to the Spleen manifests as abdominal distension.
Abdominal distension is easy to treat. Caoshen Dan (Grass Spirit Pill), Jinye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill), Quanzhen Dan (Complete True Pill), Laifu Dan (Returning to Origin Pill), etc., can all be taken. If the cold pathogen is severe, Jiangfu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) should be used. In this syndrome, quack doctors often use purgative drugs, causing sudden complications such as massive abdominal enlargement and edema. At this point, it is urgent to moxa the Mingguan acupoint for two hundred moxibustion cones to preserve life; delay makes it difficult to save. (This syndrome is what the Huangdi Neijing refers to as death caused by the accumulation of Yang qi; it must not be treated incorrectly. If there is abdominal distension, it refers to the disease of fullness generated by internal cold of the Zang organs. If warming therapy is not employed, danger and death will ensue immediately.)
Clinical Cases:
One person, due to eating cold food during the summer months, suffered from severe chest and abdominal distension and oppression, nearly dying. After taking one hundred pills of Jinye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill), he subsequently took one hundred pills of Quanzhen Dan (Complete True Pill). Soon after, Qi descended, and he recovered. (In summer, Yin cold lurks within the body; all cold foods are forbidden. If one is careless and gets injured, without heavy doses of warming and resolving agents, how could transformation not occur?)
A child, having eaten raw apricots, injured the Spleen, suffering from severe distension and oppression, nearly dying. Moxibustion was applied to the left Mingguan acupoint for twenty cones, resulting in immediate recovery, followed by the administration of fifty pills of Quanzhen Dan (Complete True Pill). (Raw apricots should not even be eaten by adults, let alone children! It is advisable to add a small amount of Moschus (She Xiang, 麝香) to warming herbal medicines.)
Another person drank alcohol after every meal, injuring his Lung Qi, leading to distension in the chest and diaphragm and rapid breathing, nearly dying. He was cured by taking Zhuru Fen (Calcitri Powder) and Wuge San (Five Obstructions Powder). For severe cases, moxaing the Zhongfu acupoint is also effective. Taking cooling herbs would lead to Middle Fullness syndrome, which is difficult to treat. (Drinking alcohol before meals does not injure Middle Qi; however, drinking after meals causes confusion between clear and turbid Qi, thus leading to distension.)
One person was lethargic and lazy, lying down immediately after eating, causing retained food to knot in the Middle Jiao. He could not eat, and his four limbs were weary and weak. He was instructed to moxa the Zhongwan acupoint for fifty cones and take Fenqi Wan (Qi-Dispersing Pill) and Dingxiang Wan (Clove Pill), resulting in recovery. (Health preservation books state: "Walk slowly for a hundred steps after meals, and naturally the toxins of food will dissipate." Lying down immediately after eating fills the Central Palace with food, disrupting ascending and descending functions; how can illness not arise?)
