In the elderly, kidney qi declines, and when complicated by invasion of wind-cold pathogens, pain occurs in the waist, hip, and thigh. Physicians mistakenly diagnose this as Fengbi (Bi syndrome characterized by wandering pain) and treat it with Xuanfeng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder) or Chentong Wan (Pain-Chasing Pill), which severely depletes true qi and misleads many patients.
The correct method is to administer Jiangfu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) to dispel cold pathogens, or Quanzhen Dan (Complete True Elixir), and moxa Guanyuan (CV4) for one hundred Zhu (moxa cones). This will make the kidneys naturally firm and secure, preventing pain forever; furthermore, Jinye Dan (Golden Fluid Elixir) must be taken to strengthen Yuan Yang (Original Yang), ensuring no recurrence even in old age.
(For elderly lumbar pain treated as Wind-Qi Bi syndrome, severe harm is often caused; even if it is Wind-Bi, heavy use of warm tonification can disperse it.)
This condition arises from the exhaustion of Spleen and Kidney deficiency, leading to an inability to transform and transport, resulting in abdominal distension and fullness. Additionally, due to insufficient Qi, chest elevation and panting occur upon movement. One must absolutely avoid administering Qi-promoting or purgative drugs, which would further deplete Qi, transmit to the Spleen disease, and become incurable. It is suitable to take Jinye Dan and Quanzhen Dan, recovering after one month. For severe cases, moxa Mingguan (SP16) and Guanyuan (CV4) for two hundred Zhu in total. (Kidney deficiency leads to a lack of the source of generating Qi; Spleen deficiency leads to weak power of healthy transportation; thus, the syndrome of Qi deficiency with middle-jiao fullness arises. Furthermore, the *Neijing* states that internal cold generates fullness diseases. Physicians who understand this and do not use attacking/purgative methods, but instead use heavy warm-tonifying agents, will have fewer complications.)
This condition is caused by Stomach Qi deficiency and accumulation without unblocking, leading to distension and oppression under the ribs. One must absolutely not mistake it for Liver Qi stagnation and administer cooling drugs that attack the Liver, as this will hasten death. Take Caoshen Dan (Divine Grass Elixir) and Jinye Dan for ten days; for severe cases, moxa Zuoshoudou (ST23 on the left side). One application of moxa will descend Qi and bring recovery; applying moxa to Guanyuan (CV4) for one hundred Zhu afterwards is even better. (For the elderly, post-illness patients, and those with weak constitutions suffering from bilateral hypochondriac pain, the general approach should be regulating the Liver and Spleen. One must also examine whether accompanying syndromes involve deficiency or excess, making treatment quite difficult.)
Clinical Cases:
One patient had Spleen Qi deficiency, enjoyed eating cold foods but could not digest them, and often felt a smell of rotting eggs coming from the mouth. Taking Caoshen Dan led to recovery. Taking Quanzhen Dan or Jinye Dan was also effective. (Since the Spleen and Stomach are injured by food, one must not apply digestion-attacking methods again; only by treating with warm transformation will healthy transportation return.)
Another patient had Spleen Qi deficiency, causing accumulated Qi to remain under the hypochondrium, with sounds like flowing water often heard in both ribs. Taking large amounts of Caoshen Dan led to recovery. (Spleen deficiency causing accumulation requires warm-moving methods; the sound of water under the ribs relies more on warm transformation.)
