Due to deficiency-cold of Kidney Qi, coldness condenses and accumulates in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner). Taking Caoshen Dan (Divine Grass Pill) and moxibustion on Qihai (CV6, Sea of Qi) will lead to spontaneous recovery. (This syndrome is discussed in *Neijing* as occurring in all five Zang organs, but later physicians attributed it to the Liver. Mr. Dou's assertion that it stems from Kidney Qi deficiency-cold is superior to the efficacy of pills and moxibustion.)
When people reach middle age, Spleen Qi becomes deficient. If further injured by raw, cold, or hard foods, the Spleen and Stomach cannot perform their transportation and transformation functions properly. Pathogenic factors accumulate in the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), eventually transforming into stagnant fire and retained fluid/phlegm. This causes belching; over time, it develops into a syndrome of abdominal fullness and distension. One must take Caoshen Dan, Quanzhen Dan, or Jin Ye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill). (Although acid regurgitation appears mild, its harm is profound. Without careful dietary regulation and abstinence from sexual activity, it will inevitably progress to abdominal drum-like distension [Gu Zhang].)
Malaria arises from consuming excessive ice water and cold foods during summer months, damaging the Spleen and Stomach. Over time, phlegm generates. Ancient and modern discussions are flawed: some attribute it to Summerheat pathogen, others classify it according to the Six Channels, and some claim it is caused by evil spirits—all are erroneous theories. The differentiation lies solely in the Spleen and Stomach. Wei Malaria (Stomach Malaria) is easy to treat, while Pi Malaria (Spleen Malaria) is difficult to regulate. If it occurs once daily or every other day at onset, it is a Yangming Syndrome. Qingpi Yin (Clear the Spleen Decoction) and Jiema Dan (Antimalarial Pill) are suitable. If it occurs every two or three days, or starts in the afternoon and persists continuously, it is Pi Malaria. Treating this condition as ordinary malaria has misled many. The correct method is to take Quanzhen, Caoshen, or Sishen Pills. If the condition is severe and prolonged, with emaciation and reduced appetite, it is critical. Moxibustion on Zuomingguan (a point outside standard channels, often associated with the Spleen meridian on the left side) for 100 moxa cones will lead to recovery. For those who cannot afford medicine, moxibustion on Mingguan alone can also cure it. For chronic malaria, moxibustion on Mingguan is effective immediately after application; this is indeed a secret method. (Pi Malaria fundamentally belongs to righteous Qi deficiency. With proper treatment, recovery is swift. However, people today favor Chaihu (Bupleurum), using more purgative/attacking methods than tonifying ones. Ignoring that righteous Qi is already deficient, they uproot the foundation, causing delays and myriad complications. Mr. Dou’s moxibustion method is truly worthy of adoption.)
Case Record:
A patient suffered from malaria for over a month with persistent fever. A physician prescribed Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), but the fever intensified. I said, "Your condition involves severe deficiency of Spleen Qi. Taking cold-natured herbs may damage the Spleen and Stomach." The patient replied, "If I do not take cooling medicines, when will the fever subside?" I said, "*Neijing* states that at the onset of malaria, the chills cannot be stopped by fierce fire, and the heat cannot be restrained by ice water. At such times, even skilled physicians hesitate. We should support the righteous Qi and wait for it to decline naturally. Your righteous Qi is severely deficient; taking cold decoctions to reduce fire risks losing your righteous Qi before the heat is eliminated." Therefore, I applied moxibustion to Mingguan. After only 35–49 cones, the patient felt qi descending in the hypochondrium. After 30 cones, he was completely cured. (Using Baihu Tang for chronic malaria is akin to a blind man describing colors. Miu Zhongchun, a renowned physician, made such arguments, which I find inexplicable. Reading *Guang Biji*, I suspect his learning lacked foundation. Furthermore, *Bencao Jing Shu* established numerous contraindications, causing confusion among later practitioners who dared not use these herbs lightly, leading to significant harm.)
