Redness and swelling are named *He Xi Feng* (Crane's Knee Wind, a type of knee arthritis with joint deformity), where the points Yanglingquan (GB34) are suitable for acupuncture treatment.
Yinlingquan (SP9) is also a miraculous point; one realizes its remarkable efficacy once needled.
Yanglingquan (GB34): Located in the depression below the lateral epicondyle of the tibia, one finger-breadth down. Transverse needle insertion through to Yinlingquan (SP9), depth two cun, applying tonification or sedation based on the condition.
Yinlingquan (SP9): Located in the hollow depression below the medial condyle of the tibia. Transverse needle insertion through to Yanglingquan (GB34). Another method: flexing the knee, the tip of the transverse crease is the point. Needle depth two cun.
Pain from Hong Kong Foot (Hong Kong Jiao, referring to gouty arthritis or severe foot pain due to cold-dampness) is unbearable; first needle Zusanli (ST36) and Sanyinjiao (SP6).
Adding one more point is wonderful: once Jiegu (GB39) is needled, the swelling subsides immediately.
Zusanli (ST36): See previous description.
Sanyinjiao (SP6): Three cun above the tip of the medial malleolus, in the depression behind the tibia. Alternatively stated as eight cun above the medial malleolus. For Hong Kong Foot, at three cun, apply sedation; for "Ghost Pregnancy" (a traditional term for certain gynecological masses or irregular menstruation) in women, at eight cun, needle depth three fen.
Jiegu (GB39): Three cun above the tip of the lateral malleolus. Transverse needle insertion half a cun and two fen, moxibustion fourteen moxa cones.
Redness and swelling of the heel are called Cao Xie Feng (Straw Sandal Wind, referring to Achilles tendinitis or heel pain); attack should be directed at Kunlun (BL60).
Also take Taixi (KI3) and Shenmai (BL62); these three points treat the same disease pattern.
Kunlun (BL60): In the depression posterior to the lateral malleolus. Transverse needle insertion through to Lüxi (KI3, i.e., Taixi), moxibustion fourteen moxa cones, more sedation than tonification.
Taixi (KI3): Posterior to the medial malleolus, in the depression where the artery beats above the calcaneus.
Shenmai (BL62): Below the joint of the lateral malleolus, at the transverse crease between the red and white skin. Needle depth half a cun, more sedation than tonification, moxibustion is prohibited.
Qiuxu (GB40) also treats pain in the dorsum of the foot; additionally needling Xingjian (LR2) brings rapid relief.
Also take Jiexi (ST41) and Shangqiu (SP5); the distinction between tonification and sedation must be clear.
Qiuxu (GB40): Three fen anterior to the lateral malleolus. If there is numbness, apply tonification; if the dorsum of the foot is red and swollen, bloodletting is excellent.
Xingjian (LR2): Between the first and second toes, in the depression between the bifurcating bones at the tiger's mouth. Needle depth half a cun, moxibustion fourteen moxa cones; apply sedation for pain, tonification for itching and numbness.
Jiexi (ST41): In the depression outside the large tendon at the ankle joint. Needle depth half a cun, moxibustion seven moxa cones; for heavy head or wind-headache, tonify first then sedate; this point is also known as the Straw Sandal Belt point.
Shangqiu (SP5): Below the medial malleolus, slightly three cun forward. Oblique needle insertion three fen, posteriorly penetrating to Kunlun (BL60).
