Chen Zishan stated: The ancients discussed epilepsy extensively, generally attributing it to fright received in the womb or triggered by loud noises and sudden shocks after birth. Since a child's Shen Qi (vital spirit and consciousness) is still weak, fright causes the Shen to lose its residence; when the residence is empty, Phlegm-Saliva accumulates there. This leads to mental confusion, dizziness, and disorientation; pulling of the mouth and eyes; upward staring of the eyes; spasms and convulsions of the hands and feet; rigidity of the back and spine; sounds resembling those of cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, chickens, or dogs during attacks; sudden collapse; foaming at the mouth; and loss of consciousness. For any case of this syndrome, it is purely due to Wind-Phlegm stagnation confusing the Heart orifices. It is appropriate to administer numerous doses of formulas that dispel Wind, resolve Phlegm, regulate Qi, and calm fright. Furthermore, one must carefully examine the specific symptoms clinically to avoid errors.
Treatment methods: Push San Guan (Three Gates), Tui Liu Fu (Six Stars/Clear Six Bowels), Qing Fei Jing (Clear Lung Meridian), Bu Pi Tu (Tonify Spleen Earth), Tian Men Ru Hu Kou (Heavenly Gate into Tiger's Mouth), Rou Dou Zhou (Knead Elbow Bowl), Qia Ban Men (Pinch Palm Gate), Qia Wu Zhi Jie (Pinch Five Finger Joints), Fen Yin Yang (Divide Yin and Yang), Yun Ba Gua (Move Eight Trigrams), Chi Feng Yao Tou (Red Phoenix Shaking Head), An Xian Cuo Mo (Press String and Rub), press Wei Ling acupoint, Rou Zhong Zhi (Knead Middle Finger), Qia Zong Jing (Pinch Main Meridian), moisturize Kun Lun (Moxibustion on Kunlun).
Chen Zishan stated: Coughing is a condition that invariably arises from catching a cold. The Classic states: "Why does the Lung cause coughing?" Qibo replied: "The skin and hair are the external correspondence of the Lung." When the skin and hair first receive pathogenic factors, and these factors follow their correspondence, they injure the Lung, resulting in cough. For instance, removing clothes when the weather suddenly warms up, encountering wind after sudden heat, or playing in water while sweat is still wet can lead to Cold injury and cough. At the initial stage, the face is red, lips are crimson, breathing is coarse, and there is fever; this is Wind injury causing cough due to Phlegm obstruction. If prolonged, body fluids are depleted, and the Lung Meridian becomes deficient. The Lung is the canopy of all Zang organs; it opens when lying down and closes when sitting upright. Therefore, breathlessness occurs when lying down, while sitting provides slight relief. This is caused by excessive use of methods that attack the Lung and drain Phlegm, a condition named Deficient Cough. In such cases, one should tonify the Spleen to benefit the Lung, utilizing the Qi of Earth to generate Metal, so that recovery will occur naturally.
Treatment methods: Push San Guan (Three Gates), Tui Liu Fu (Six Stars/Clear Six Bowels), Qing Fei Jing (Clear Lung Meridian - pushing upwards), Tui Er Feng Men (Push Two Doors), Tui Er Ren Shang Ma (Push Two People Mounting Horse), Wu Zong Jing (Five Main Meridians - rotate six times, pinch once), frequently Rou Fei Yu Xue (Knead Lung Healing Point), Qia Wu Zhi Jie (Pinch Five Finger Joints), Qia He Gu (Pinch Hegu), Yun Ba Gua (Move Eight Trigrams), frequently Rou Da Zhi Gen (Knead Base of Thumb), Tian Men Ru Hu Kou (Heavenly Gate into Tiger's Mouth), Ban Men (Palm Gate). If there is Phlegm obstruction with panting, Qia Xiang Dao Xue (Pinch Guide Point), then Qia Ban Men (Pinch Palm Gate). If Phlegm knots and obstructs, frequently Yun Ba Gua (Move Eight Trigrams). For dry cough, push Liu Fu (Six Stars/Clear Six Bowels). For Phlegm cough, push Fei Jing (Lung Meridian), push Pi Jing (Spleen Meridian), clear Shen Jing (Kidney Meridian), and Yun Ba Gua (Move Eight Trigrams). For panting, Qia Fei Jing Zou Qi (Pinch Flying Meridian Moving Qi) and Si Heng Wen (Four Horizontal Lines).
Tu Weisheng stated: Chen Zishan's discussion of symptoms in this section is largely not precise enough; referring to the Cough entries in Volume 3 will make this clear.
