[Five Types of Apparent Death] 1. Hanging. 2. Crushed by walls. 3. Drowning. 4. Yanmei (fainting caused by fright or evil spirits). 5. Postpartum fainting and suffocation. For all these conditions, use raw Pinelliae Rhizoma (Sheng Banxia) ground into powder, mixed with cold water to form pills the size of small beans, and insert them into the nostrils. Simultaneously, blow dry powder into the ears, or use Polygoni Multiflori Caulis Powder (Zao Jiao) blown into the nose and ears. Even if death has occurred for one day, it is still treatable. Chicken feces can be stir-fried until dry, mixed with wine, and administered orally to save the patient. Alternatively, moxibustion on the Renge acupoint (Ren-26) can facilitate awakening.
[Hanging] Do not cut the rope with a knife or scissors under any circumstances. Even if several hours have passed from morning to evening, as long as there is slight warmth in the epigastrium, rescue is possible. Gently untie the rope, place the patient on a flat surface, supine with face up, and keep the head aligned. Slowly flex the limbs. Firmly block the anus to prevent gas leakage. One person pulls the hair while another stands on both shoulders. Apply blood from a rooster comb (use hen's comb for males, rooster's comb for females) into the ear canal. Then, two people insert a reed tube (or a hollow pen barrel) into the ear and continuously blow air into it, while simultaneously massaging the chest continuously until the patient awakens. If breathing is irregular, strike the lower back three or four times. After a moment, administer small amounts of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) or fresh ginger soup to hold in the mouth and swallow. Take an old goose, smear sesame oil on its beak, and insert it into the anus; the patient will revive within one to two hours.
[Drowning] Absolutely avoid using fire to dry or warm the body, as this may force cold pathogens inward, making rescue impossible. Place the patient prone across the belly of a cow, supported by attendants on both sides. Lead the cow slowly to help expel water from the abdomen. Rub the teeth with slices of fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma (Lao Jiang) to restore life. First, place a chopstick horizontally in the mouth to facilitate drainage. Lying on an iron wok can also help expel water. After regaining consciousness, place the patient supine on a large stool with the feet elevated. Rub salt into the navel (Shenque, CV-8); water will naturally flow out. Do not hang the patient upside down. Administer Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill) mixed with water. If water does not drain, wrap Polygoni Multiflori Caulis Powder (Zao Jiao) in paper and insert it into the anus to promote drainage.
[Freezing to Death] Absolutely avoid direct fire warming. Use ash heated in a pouch to apply heat to the precordial region; replace when cool. Warm the heart area first. Once breath returns and eyes open, slowly administer warm wine and ginger soup to awaken the patient.
[Death by Fright] Administer warm, pure alcohol orally to restore consciousness.
[Detoxification from Arsenic Poisoning] Symptoms include restlessness resembling madness, severe abdominal pain, dizziness, vomiting, cyanotic complexion, cold extremities, and surging, rapid pulses. Poisoning via food/drink is easier to treat than ingestion on an empty stomach with wine/vinegar. If caught early, urgently administer one to two bowls of sesame oil; inducing vomiting resolves the toxicity. Consume one to two bowls of fresh sheep blood or duck blood while warm to detoxify. Drink Di Jiang Shui (Earth Slurry Water) (see Shanghan section for formula); take in large quantities. If vomited, take again. Clarification is not necessary; muddy water can be drunk. "To wash away the poison in the belly, rely entirely on earth slurry." After detoxification, use half a sheng of Mung Bean (Lv Dou), ground raw into powder, mixed with fresh well water, strained, and the juice administered. If the patient remains delirious and mute after one day of waking, boil mung bean juice daily, chill it, and drink it; as toxins are expelled, peace will return. If two to three hours have passed and the poison has entered the intestines without being vomited, administer one to two liang of Qing Qian Shui (Lead Water) prepared by grinding Qing Qian (Galena/Lead Ore); inducing diarrhea resolves the toxicity.
[Detoxification from Brine Poisoning] Administer large amounts of raw soybean milk. (If unavailable, quickly soak yellow soybeans, mash them, and squeeze out the juice.) After half an hour, administer soap water or wallpaper paste water to induce vomiting of brain-like substances, indicating survival. (Do not consume hot.) Alternatively, administer warm fresh sheep blood, or decapitate a live chicken and insert the neck into the throat to administer the blood internally. (Use one or two chickens for mild poisoning, four or five for severe cases.) Survival is indicated by vomiting. If post-vomiting symptoms include chest pain and hoarseness, administer white sugar water daily; recovery occurs within five to seven days.
