[Mad Dog Bite] In late spring and early summer, dogs are prone to madness. Their tails drag straight on the ground, they drool from the mouth, and those with black tongues are the most dangerous. If not treated urgently, males will die within seven days, and females within one month. If medicines are unavailable in an emergency, immediately squeeze out the bad blood from the wound in a windless place. If the wound is dry, prick it with a needle to bleed. Then wash the wound with urine or salt water broth. Immediately apply mashed green onion (Cong Bai) to the affected area. Alternatively, mash castor seeds (Bixian Ren) with well water into a paste for application. Or stir-fry apricot kernels (Xingren) until black, mash into a paste, and apply. Cow dung and earthworm mud can also be used for emergency relief. Alternatively, use Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum (Tiannanxing, 天南星 - raw and finely ground) and Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fangfeng, 防风 - equal parts finely ground), sprinkle onto the wound to prevent suppuration. If treatment is delayed even slightly and the toxic qi enters the interior, it cannot be saved.
Use twenty-one Mylabris phaleratae (Dabanmao, 大斑蝥 - remove head, feet, and wings). Take a pinch of glutinous rice. First, stir-fry seven Mylabris and half a Semina Strychni (Mubiezi, 木鳖子) in the rice over low heat; do not let them burn. Remove the Mylabris. Add another seven Mylabris and half a Semina Strychni, stir-fry with rice until charred. Remove the Mylabris again. Add the final seven Mylabris and half a Semina Strychni, stir-fry with rice until blue smoke appears. Discard the Mylabris. Only grind the rice and Semina Strychni into powder. Divide into three doses. Take one dose fasting, mixed with cold water and a few drops of sesame oil. After a short while, take the next dose. Continue until foul matter is discharged via urination and defecation. If abdominal pain occurs after taking the medicine, immediately take Dianqing (Indigo Naturalis, 靛青) mixed with cold water. Or drink decoction of Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian, 黄连) and Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao, 甘草) cooled down. Or mix Yi Yuan San (Yiyuan San, 益元散 - see Summerheat chapter) with cold water. Do not eat hot foods. (Note: Mylabris is toxic and can be fatal; this is using poison to attack poison, which is necessary. Glutinous rice is used to moderate it, and cooling medicines should be prepared to detoxify.) One to two days later, use Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 白芷) 5 qian and Xionghuang (Realgar, 雄黄) 2.5 qian. Mash with leek juice and wine to take. For forty-nine days, eat plenty of leek juice. Within one hundred days, avoid foods that trigger wind, greasy/meaty foods, chicken, duck, and eggs. Avoid listening to gongs and drums. Strictly prohibit sexual intercourse; violators cannot be saved. Lifelong abstinence from dog meat is required; recurrence after eating it is incurable. Avoid eggplants and small red adzuki beans. After taking Mylabris medicine for four or five doses, lack of bowel movement is acceptable. The bite typically flares up around the seventh day; if no flare-up occurs by the twenty-first day (3x7), one may be spared. If a red hair appears in the center of the crown within three to four days, pluck it out urgently. If pain stops and the wound closes, assuming recovery without further treatment often leads to death.
For mild cases, use Fumu Die (Semen Strychni, 番木鳖) 1 qian, stir-fried in a copper pot until powdered. Mix with Xionghuang (Realgar, 雄黄) 4 fen. Take 3.5 fen mixed with cold water. Stop when blood is discharged via urination and defecation. If taboos are not observed after recovery, recurrence renders all medicines ineffective. For critical cases, use Xionghuang (Realgar, 雄黄) 5 qian and Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) 3 fen, finely ground. Take 2 qian mixed with good wine. The patient must sleep after taking the medicine; do not startle them awake. Let them wake naturally. Once foul matter is discharged, administer the previous medicine again for survival.
[Bites from Various Dogs] Endure the pain first. Wash with human urine or river water, squeezing out bloody fluid. Immediately apply Tiger Bone (Hugu, 虎骨 - calcined and finely ground) as a dry powder to the wound for immediate effect. Alternatively, apply head dandruff/scabs to the wound, and cover externally with cow dung. Or scrape grease residue from butcher's chopping blocks, mix with sugar, and apply. All external pastes used for mad dog bites are applicable here.
[Lockjaw / Tetanus] Severe injuries from wild wolves, dogs, snakes, scorpions, and centipedes, or wounds exposed to wind causing trismus (lockjaw), opisthotonos (arching of back), and unconsciousness. Quickly apply sliced garlic or mashed garlic pulp to the wound. Perform moxibustion with mugwort cones placed on garlic slices (Garlic Moxibustion). Apply 30-50 moxa cones; results are immediate. Internal formulas are listed under Fractures and Injuries. Externally, apply Ash of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参) burned from mulberry wood branches.
[Poisonous Snake Bite] Prick the wound with a needle to bleed. Tie tightly above and below the wound with a rope to prevent toxic qi from spreading to healthy tissue. Immerse the wound in a urine jar. Ensure the stomach is full to prevent internal attack by toxins. (Do not immerse if the case is mild.) Immediately apply Xionghuang (Realgar, 雄黄) 5 qian and Lingzhi (Pantotrichum, 五灵脂) 1 liang, or mash Sanqi (Notoginseng, 三七) and apply. The toxin dissipates immediately. Alternatively, take one large Toad (Xiahama, 虾蟆), remove entrails, mash, and apply. Replace when dry. Three to four applications are harmless and highly effective. (Also treats mad dog bites and other venomous animal bites.) Subsequently, take powder of Radix Asari (Xixin, 细辛) and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 白芷) (5 qian each) and Xionghuang (Realgar, 雄黄) 5 fen. Take 3 qian per dose mixed with good wine. If the toxicity is severe and sensation is lost, mix dry flour with water to form a ring around the wound. Melt 1 liang of Alum (Mingfan, 明矾) in a spoon and pour it hot into the ring. The wound instantly turns to clear liquid, relieving pain. For mild cases, melt alum and dab it on the wound with a chopstick tip; pain returning indicates resolution. Take juice of Herba Siegesbeckiae (Banzhilian, 半枝莲) mixed with wine, and apply the dregs. Or take juice of Jiulong Cao (Kadsura Longipedunculata, 九龙草 - resembles bayberry, grows in marshes) mixed with 1 qian of Xionghuang powder; both relieve pain quickly. If toxin enters the interior causing eye closure and lockjaw, take juice of Fructus Xanthii (Cangercao, 苍耳草) mixed with wine, and apply dregs externally for rescue.
[Bites from Various Snakes] Urgently wash away bad blood with urine. Apply saliva to the wound; scrape saliva near the teeth and seal the wound to prevent swelling and pain. Previous formulas can be used as appropriate.
[Venom from Hundred Insects] Bites from snakes, insects, sand fleas, etc. Apply mashed garlic. Eat more garlic and drink alcohol, or perform Garlic Moxibustion. These methods detoxify and relieve pain. Apply Dianqing (Indigo Naturalis, 靛青) juice for immediate effect.
[Snake Entering Seven Orifices] Urgently perform moxibustion; the snake tail will retreat. Immediately grind Xionghuang (Realgar, 雄黄) and Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) finely. Decoct Renshen (Ginseng, 人参) soup to mix and administer. Eat garlic and drink alcohol afterwards to eliminate internal toxin. Rescue is possible. In areas with snakes, burn a bean-sized piece of Xionghuang (Realgar, 雄黄) to smoke clothes and bedding to repel them. In summer, for dog bites and fractures with many maggots and unbearable odor, use She Tui (Ophichthus Skin, 蛇蜕 - 1 liang, calcined), Chan Tui (Cicada Slough, 蝉蜕), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 青黛) (5 qian each), and Xixin (Asarum Root, 细辛) (2.5 qian). Grind finely and take 3 qian with good wine. Externally apply Han Shui Shi (Halloysitum Rubrum, 寒水石) powder. Recovery in ten days.
[Scorpion Sting] Mix Banxia (Pinellia Ternata, 半夏 - raw) and Mingfan (Alum, 明矾) in equal parts, finely ground. Apply with vinegar to the painful area. Rub with Danfan (Chalcanthite, 胆矾) for immediate relief.
[Centipede Poison] Wash wound with salt water. Chew Zicai (Purple Seaweed, 紫菜) in mouth and apply to wound to relieve pain. Apply Banxia (Pinellia Ternata, 半夏) powder mixed with vinegar for immediate effect. Alternatively, apply two land slugs (Yanyou, 蜒蚰) with a little Bingpian (Borneol, 冰片); this is most effective. Chew Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit, 吴茱萸) and apply. Drill a hole in half a pod of Gleditsia Sinensis (Zaojiao, 皂荚), apply to wound, and moxibustion through the hole for 3-5 cones; excellent for pain relief. Smoke rolled paper from below to fumigate the wound for instant pain relief. Mud from the bottom of a well can also be applied. If someone accidentally swallows a centipede into the throat, drink fresh chicken blood immediately, then induce vomiting with sesame oil; the centipede will come out.
[Bee Stinger Embedded] Wash with hot wine first to facilitate stinger removal. Apply Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 青黛 - ground) mixed with sesame oil. Alternatively, chew Qinghao (Artemisia Annua, 青蒿) and apply. Or rub with taro (Yuna, 芋艿) to relieve pain. (Stems are effective if tubers are unavailable.) Apply Banxia (Pinellia Ternata, 半夏) powder mixed with vinegar.
[Eight-Legged Insect Venom] This insect hides in walls and causes sores resembling burns when its urine contacts skin. Burn feathers from a black chicken to ash, mix with egg white, and apply.
[Earthworm Poison] Symptoms resemble leprosy, with loss of eyebrows and beard. Soak the affected area in hot water infused with Duan Shi (Calcined Alumen, 锻石) after cooling. Prolonged soaking is effective.
[Spider Bite] Spider bites cause thread-like growths on the body; drinking sheep milk resolves this. Externally, apply Hufen (Lead White, 胡粉) mixed with ginger juice to the wound for immediate effect. For unbearable pain from insect bites, roll a large paper wick, dip in sesame oil, light it, and fumigate the wound. The toxin enters the smoke, providing instant pain relief. This is the best method.
[Poplar Thorn Injury] Rinse the wound with water. Apply mashed Portulaca Oleracea (Machixian, 马齿苋) to relieve pain. Applying honey is also effective.
[Leech Embedded] If a leech cannot be removed, take a handful of women's hair and 8 liang of rapeseed oil. Boil the oil, add hair, fry until burnt, strain. Fry five eggs in the remaining oil. Ingesting this is harmless.
[Caterpillar Bite Toxicity] Caterpillar bites inject toxin into flesh, causing chills and fever. Apply juice of Ramie Leaves (Zhuye, 苎叶) to the site.
[Tiger Bite] Drink one bowl of sesame oil to prevent toxin absorption. Wash wound with ginger juice, apply ground Alum (Mingfan, 明矾) powder to relieve pain. Drink fresh Polygonum Cuspidatum (Shengge, 生葛) juice frequently (5-6 times day and night) and wash the wound with it.
[Horse Bite] Drink one bowl of Suxmu (Sappan Wood, 苏木) juice to relieve pain. Apply rat feces (burned and powdered) mixed with lard to the wound. Alternatively, perform moxibustion on the wound. If toxin reaches the heart, it is critical; decoct and drink Portulaca Oleracea (Machixian, 马齿苋). For horse trampling injuries, drink child's urine or leek juice (1-2 bowls) urgently. Externally apply finely ground Han Shui Shi (Halloysitum Rubrum, 寒水石) powder.
[Pig Bite] Decoct Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, 黄连) and Gancao (Licorice Root, 甘草) to wash the wound. Apply a cake made of melted Pine Resin (Songzhi, 松脂) to the wound.
[Rat Bite] Burn cat fur to ash (calcined), add a little Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香), mix with sesame oil, and apply.
