[Water Chestnut / Cyperus rotundus (Note: Text describes distinct plants, likely referring to Eleocharis or similar aquatic plants historically grouped)]
Taste: bitter, sweet. Nature: slightly cold. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: treats diabetes mellitus (Xiao Ke), bi-heat, warms the middle jiao, benefits qi. Alternative names: Jie Gu, Shui Ping. Leaves emerge in the second lunar month; sun-dry the leaves.
Currently, Jie Gu grows in paddy fields. The leaves are lobed, resembling those of Alisma orientale (Ze Xie), but not exactly like a taro. Its root is yellow and resembles a small taro tuber; it is edible after boiling. It is suspected that its name "Wu" (black) derives from this characteristic. Currently, there is a plant called "Wu" with roots extremely similar—slender and fine—but the leaves differ significantly, resembling Carex (Guan Cao), and is called Fu Ci. It is feared that this is incorrect identification.
[Commentary]: This herb is also known as Cha Ya or Ci Gu. It treats various toxins, postpartum blood stagnation attacking the heart causing near-death sensation, and difficult labor with retained placenta. Crush and take one sheng of the juice. It grows in water; leaves resemble arrowheads, belonging to the Alisma group. *Qian Jin Fang* states: it treats stone strangury (Shi Lin).

The flowers: Taste bitter, non-toxic. Indications: tonifies deficiencies, treats women's internal injury, cold-heat bi-syndrome, jue-ni (cold extremities).
The fruit: Taste sour. Do not eat excessively, as it damages sinews and bones. Grows in mountains and valleys of Jin region.
Synergies/Incompatibilities: Benefits from fire processing (roasting); incompatible with Astragali Radix (Huang Qi), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin), and Puerariae Radix (Ge Gen); resolves tin toxicity; fears Descurainiae Semen Lepidii et Lepidii Semen (Ting Li Cao). Widely available; commonly used in pharmacy. Soak in decoction to remove red skin, roast until yellow.

Folklore says peach kernel makes dairy products cold in nature. Peach gum is used by immortals/herbalists. Peach flowers harvested on the third day of the third lunar month are also needed for alchemical formulas. Dialect says consuming all flowers from three peach trees results in a peach-blossom complexion; humans are forbidden to eat peaches.
